Jecheon City Selected for Ministry of Science and ICT’s ‘2026 Support Project for Expanding Children’s Science Experience Spaces’
Jecheon City announced that it has secured 1 billion won in state funding after being finally selected for the ‘2026 Support Project for Expanding Children’s Science Experience Spaces,’ organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
This project supports the creation of small-scale science experience spaces so that children can encounter science close to their daily lives. Jecheon City was ultimately selected following a rigorous screening process that included written evaluations, presentation evaluations, and on-site inspections.
In particular, the city received high marks for proposing a concept of an "observation and experiment playground where nature and life harmonize," actively utilizing the infrastructure of "traditional Korean medicine natural products," a region specialized industry.
Key contents will include experiential facilities tailored to children's perspectives, such as: ▲ "Mysterious Life Bundle," where children can experience and learn the basic principles of life; ▲ "Honeycomb Secret Garden," where they can experience ecosystem coexistence through features like an ant colony maze; and ▲ "Whispering Green Hideout," which integrates artificial intelligence and augmented reality technologies into a botanical garden. The city is investing a total of 3 billion won in this project, comprising 1 billion won in state funding and 2 billion won in city funding. The plan is to remodel the existing "Medicinal Herb Botanical Garden" within the Oriental Medicine Expo Park into a science experience space exclusively for children, with the goal of opening in January 2028.
The project site, the Oriental Medicine Expo Park, is expected to generate significant synergy due to the concentration of nearby educational and experiential facilities, such as the Oriental Medicine Life Science Hall and the Safety Experience Hall. Furthermore, leveraging its geographical advantage of being adjacent to the Jecheon Interchange (IC), it is projected to serve as a hub for science and culture that encompasses children from neighboring cities and counties in the central inland region, including Danyang, Chungju, Yeongwol, and Wonju.
Choi Seung-hwan, Acting Mayor of Jecheon, stated, "With the selection in this public competition, a foundation has been laid for local children to grow into future scientific talents," adding, "We will develop this into a unique and differentiated science and culture space that can be enjoyed year-round by both residents and tourists."
