Jeonnam Fire Department Conducts Unannounced Inspections of Cold Storage and Freezer Warehouses… 39 Locations Found to Have ‘Poor Fire Safety Facilities’
Following the Wando Fire in April, a Comprehensive Survey of 113 Locations Was Conducted… 81 Administrative Measures, Including Fines – Chief Choi Min-cheol: “Disabling or Neglecting Fire Safety Facilities Is a Serious Crime; We Will Strictly Punish Them with a Zero-Tolerance Principle”
(Jangheung = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters conducted unannounced fire safety inspections of cold storage and freezer warehouses in the province, identifying 39 locations with poor fire safety facility management and taking strict action.
The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters announced on the 17th that, following a cold storage fire accident in the province last April, it conducted a joint safety inspection of 113 cold storage and freezer warehouses within its jurisdiction. As a result, it took a total of 81 administrative measures, including the imposition of fines, against 39 locations where poor fire safety facility management was confirmed. This comprehensive inspection is a follow-up measure to the fire accident that occurred at a cold storage warehouse in Wando-gun on April 12. At the time, the fire started due to careless use of a torch during epoxy work and spread rapidly through flammable interior materials such as sandwich panels and polyurethane foam. In particular, due to the nature of the warehouse, large amounts of toxic gases were released and the fire load was high, making firefighting extremely difficult.
In response, the Fire Department formed a joint investigation team comprising the National Fire Agency, local governments, and private experts to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents and launched an intensive three-week investigation. To enhance the effectiveness of the crackdown, the inspection was conducted using an "unannounced safety inspection" method, visiting sites without prior notice.
As a result of the investigation, violations, such as poor management of fire safety facilities, were detected at 39 locations, accounting for approximately 34.5% of the 113 inspected sites. The joint investigation team took a total of 81 administrative measures against the offending entities, including 2 fines, 15 notifications to relevant agencies, and 64 corrective orders.
In particular, a "zero-tolerance principle" was applied to companies that arbitrarily tampered with or damaged firefighting facilities, which are directly linked to large-scale casualties in the event of a fire, and severe penalties were imposed.
Choi Min-cheol, Head of the Jeonnam Fire Department, emphasized, "Due to the structural characteristics of cold and freezing warehouses, there is a very high risk that a fire will lead to massive casualties and property damage once it starts." He added, "Since the act of arbitrarily blocking or neglecting firefighting facilities is a serious crime that jeopardizes the lives of the residents, we will continue to thoroughly eliminate safety blind spots through ongoing unannounced inspections."
