Jeonnam Forest Research Institute Strengthens ‘Science-Based Monitoring and Control of Forest Pests and Diseases’ in Response to Climate Change
Early Detection and Precise Diagnosis via Drone-Based Aerial Monitoring and Operation of 110 Fixed Survey Sites; Simultaneous Testing for Eco-friendly Control of Pine Wilt Disease and Selection of New Pesticides
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = As the activity period of forest pests has lengthened and the occurrence of sudden pest outbreaks has surged due to recent climate change, the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute has set out to significantly strengthen research on science-based monitoring, precise diagnosis, and control technologies.
Due to the recent rise in temperatures, the emergence (the process of pupae becoming adults) of major forest pests, including the long-horned beetle (Cerambyx longicornis), the vector of pine wilt disease, is occurring earlier, and their activity periods are also extending. Consequently, damage from pests and diseases is spreading not only to forests but also to street trees and urban forests within cities.
Accordingly, the Jeonnam Forest Research Institute has launched active surveillance activities by establishing a close cooperative system with forestry departments in cities and counties within the province to enable the early detection and timely control of forest pests and diseases through accurate diagnosis.
To ensure efficient surveillance, the institute formulated a field-tailored plan that comprehensively considers target site selection, surveillance priorities, and the frequency and timing of surveys. In particular, the efficiency and accuracy of surveillance have been dramatically enhanced by conducting aerial surveillance using drones in rugged forest areas that are difficult for personnel to access.
Currently, the institute has installed fixed survey plots at 110 locations across 22 cities and counties in the province and is conducting precise investigations into the timing and scale of outbreaks for a total of 15 major forest and urban forest pests and diseases. The targets of the investigation include major forest pests such as pine wilt disease, pine needle gall midge, pine bark scale insect, and oak wilt disease, as well as pests that cause significant damage to street trees, such as cherry broom disease, American white moth, sycamore powdery mildew, and Korean white fringe rust. In addition to collecting forest pests using light traps, we plan to conduct regular monthly surveys of sudden pest outbreaks in 10 major forest areas, including scenic spots and national parks, until this coming September.
In particular, to prevent pine wilt disease, which causes the greatest damage to forests, we are closely monitoring the emergence of the vector insect, the long-horned pine sawyer. In areas with severe damage, we are also implementing a simultaneous control method using "pheromone lure traps," an eco-friendly pest control technique, to directly capture and collect the vector insects.
Furthermore, regarding new pests causing damage to street trees and landscaping trees, such as the gall moth and Rhus verniciflua leaf blight, we are conducting ex officio pesticide registration trials to select agents with high control efficacy and verified safety.
