South Jeolla Province Holds 46th Day of Persons with Disabilities Commemoration Ceremony… Pledges ‘Integrated Society Without Discrimination’

Commemoration event held at Hong Gil-dong Gymnasium in Jangseong on the 28th… Commendations for meritorious individuals and scholarship donations held - Activist Moon Ae-jun selected for Grand Prize at ‘Jeonnam Outstanding Person with Disabilities Award’… Recognized for contributions to improving the rights and interests of women with disabilities

(Jangseong·Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province held the ‘46th Day of Persons with Disabilities’ commemoration ceremony at Hong Gil-dong Gymnasium in Jangseong-gun on the 28th, creating a venue for harmony to promote the rights and interests of persons with disabilities and social integration.

Organized by the Joint Promotion Committee for the Jeonnam Day of Persons with Disabilities Commemoration Ceremony (composed of organizations for the physically, visually, and deaf), the event was graced by the presence of approximately 2,000 attendees, including South Jeolla Governor Kim Young-rok, Jangseong County Deputy Mayor Shim Woo-jeong, persons with disabilities and their families, and volunteers. Held under the slogan "A Natural Daily Life for Everyone to Enjoy," the event opened with a pre-ceremony performance by the Nanta team from the Jangseong County Welfare Center for the Disabled. The program proceeded with the viewing of a video reading of the Charter of Human Rights for Persons with Disabilities, awards for distinguished service, commemorative and congratulatory remarks, and a scholarship donation ceremony, acknowledging the efforts of those who have contributed to the development of welfare for the disabled.

In particular, the awards ceremony for the "Jeollanam-do Outstanding Disabled Person Award," presented to individuals who have overcome disabilities and become role models for society, garnered significant attention.

The prestigious Grand Prize was awarded to activist Moon Ae-jun, who has dedicated over 20 years to improving the rights and interests of women with disabilities and building welfare infrastructure. Activist Moon was highly praised for establishing a foundation for self-reliance in the local community by overcoming a physical disability to lead the founding of the Jeonnam Women with Disabilities Solidarity, the opening of a sexual violence counseling center and shelter, and the establishment of the women's disability cafe "Dagati." In addition to this, four individuals were named recipients of the "Outstanding Person with Disabilities Award": Kim Jong-in, Director of the Jangseong County Welfare Center for the Disabled; Moon Gwang-wook, a user of the Hanuri Day Care Center for the Disabled; Shim Jae-geun, CEO of Chamdeun Health Science Co., Ltd.; and Lee Kang-ho, Secretary General of the Jeonnam Provincial Braille Library for the Visually Impaired. Furthermore, a total of 29 individuals were honored, including those receiving commendations from the Minister of Health and Welfare.

News of donations also added significance to the event. The Jeonnam Association of the Physically Disabled presented a scholarship of 10 million won to Jeonnam Province, requesting that it be used to foster local talent, adding a heartwarming touch to the occasion.

At the booths for side events around the venue, on-site services providing practical assistance—such as repairs for assistive devices, mobile cafes (food trucks), exhibitions of products made by the disabled, and employment counseling—were provided and received a great response from the attendees. Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “This commemorative ceremony is an occasion to reaffirm our resolve to create a society where people with and without disabilities are respected without discrimination.” He added, “In particular, taking advantage of the administrative integration of Jeonnam and Gwangju, we will significantly expand opportunities for the independence and social participation of people with disabilities within our broadened living sphere, and build a more comprehensive welfare system to ensure that not a single person is left behind.”

Meanwhile, ‘National Disability Day,’ designated as April 20th every year, is a statutory commemorative day established to deepen public understanding of people with disabilities and to inspire their motivation for rehabilitation; related commemorative events are held across the country every year.
