South Jeolla Province Joins World’s Largest Environmental Organization ‘IUCN’… Standing Tall as a Global Ecological Hub

Membership Confirmed in World’s Largest Nature Conservation Organization… Securing International Voice and Voting Rights – Laying the Foundation to Lead International Discussions on Biodiversity Conservation and Host the ‘World Conservation Congress (WCC)’

(Muan·Suncheon = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has established itself as a center of global ecological and environmental cooperation by confirming its membership in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest international nature conservation organization.

South Jeolla Province announced on the 13th that it recently received notification from the IUCN confirming its membership. Through this membership, the province has laid the foundation to promote its region’s excellent ecological resources to the world and to lead the resolution of environmental issues together with the international community.

Established in 1948, the IUCN is the world’s most authoritative environmental organization, with over 1,600 government agencies and NGOs currently participating. With this membership, South Jeolla Province has gained the status to exercise official speaking rights and voting rights at international conferences. Accordingly, the province will now directly participate in major international discussions regarding species conservation, protected area management, and the Convention on Biological Diversity. In particular, the province plans to attend the World Conservation Congress (WCC), often referred to as the "Environmental Olympics," to share Jeonnam’s unique and differentiated ecological policies and to accelerate the identification of joint projects utilizing its international network.

Jeonnam Province will receive expert advisory support regarding biodiversity through the Korean National Commission of the IUCN, while also strengthening cooperation with the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Through these efforts, the province envisions systematizing the international certification of its natural resources and solidifying the foundation of the convention.

In particular, this membership is expected to serve as a positive signal for Jeonnam Province’s bid to host the World Conservation Congress (WCC), a project the province has been heavily investing in. The province plans to leverage its symbolic ecological resources, such as the Muan Tidal Flats, to actively attract international forums and events, thereby elevating its status as a leading local government. South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “This membership in the IUCN is the result of global recognition of South Jeolla’s ecological value,” adding, “Taking this as an opportunity, we will actively share South Jeolla’s ecological policies with the international community and complete a global cooperation model where nature conservation leads directly to regional development.”

Meanwhile, to commemorate the confirmation of membership, South Jeolla Province plans to highlight the value of local ecological resources, such as Muan Tidal Flat Provincial Park, and continuously carry out environmental conservation campaigns together with the residents.
