South Jeolla Province Goes ‘All-Out’ to Help Farmers During Spring Season… Large-scale Implementation Until June
Participation of the Provincial, City/County, and Related Agencies Begins with Hampyeong Onion Harvest… Priority Support for Underprivileged Farmers
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province announced that it will extensively promote the ‘Spring Rural Labor Assistance’ program for two months until June to help farmers struggling with labor shortages as the rice planting and onion harvesting seasons begin in earnest.
The province has designated this period as an intensive support phase and will establish and operate ‘Rural Labor Assistance Support Desks’ at the provincial headquarters, city/county offices, towns/villages/district offices, and local agricultural cooperatives on a continuous basis. Through this, the province plans to deploy timely manpower to rural areas facing labor shortages.
The beneficiaries of this support are primarily households performing agricultural tasks that are difficult to mechanize and require a significant amount of manual labor. In particular, the plan is to prioritize households vulnerable to labor shortages—such as small-scale farmers, elderly farmers, and farmers with disabilities—and provide intensive support for tasks including harvesting onions, garlic, and plums, thinning fruit, and bagging.
To mark the start of full-scale activities, approximately 60 employees from the Jeonnam Provincial Bureau of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food visited an elderly farm in Daedong-myeon, Hampyeong-gun on the 8th to lend a hand. The employees worked alongside farmers in an onion field spanning about 2,500 square meters, experiencing firsthand the difficulties faced on the ground.
The farmer who received the assistance expressed his gratitude, stating, "I was very worried because finding workers ahead of the harvest season was extremely difficult. However, thanks to the provincial government employees helping as if it were their own work, we were able to finish the harvest on time."
Following this support in Hampyeong, Jeonnam Province plans to continue providing labor assistance in the Yeongam region as well. In addition, each department and bureau within the provincial government plans to continuously visit farms throughout Jeonnam, including Yeosu and Naju, until the end of June to assist with tasks such as garlic harvesting and pear thinning.
Yoo Deok-gyu, Director General of the Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Bureau of Jeonnam Province, emphasized, “As labor shortages during the peak farming season have a direct impact on farm management, active participation from agencies, organizations, and companies is urgently needed to ensure timely harvesting.” He added, “Jeonnam Province will mobilize all available personnel to provide the utmost support and minimize inconvenience on the ground.”
