Jeonnam Office of Education Student Education Center Holds ‘Middle School Peace, Human Rights, and History Experience Camp’

65 3rd-Year Middle School Students from the Province Participate… Visit Jeju 4·3 Sites to Reflect on the ‘Jeonnam Spirit of Righteousness’

2nd Camp Center Focusing on Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Scheduled for This October

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeollanam-do Office of Education Student Education Center announced that it held the ‘1st Middle School Peace, Human Rights, and History Experience Camp’ for 65 3rd-year students from 38 middle schools in the province for three days and two nights from the 14th to the 16th.

This camp was organized as part of the ‘Jeonnam Righteousness Education’ initiative promoted by the Jeonnam Office of Education. Its purpose is to help students understand the truth by directly visiting the historical sites of Jeju 4·3 and Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19, and to help them internalize the universal values of peace and human rights.

On the first day of the camp, students visited the Jeju 4·3 Peace Park and the Neobunsungi Memorial Hall in Bukchon. In particular, the students had the opportunity to directly confront the pain of that time through the vivid testimony of Grandmother Go Wan-sun, a survivor of the Jeju 4·3 Incident. Following a tour of sites such as the Jeju Anti-Japanese Memorial Hall, they met with author Han Sang-hee, author of *Words 4·3 Spoke to Me*, in the evening to share in depth the significance of history and memory.

On the second day, starting with Donggwang Village, where their former homes have vanished, the students visited Altteureu Airfield, the Seotaloreum Massacre Site, the former home of Grandmother Myeongcheon, and Yeongmowon in succession. At these sites of horrific history, the students paid tribute to the victims and gained a multifaceted understanding of the tragedy of the Jeju 4·3 Incident.

On the final day, they visited the Jeju Mokgwan Office (Gwandukjeong) and the Alcohol Factory Detention Center (4·3 History Museum), broadly examining the flow of modern and contemporary Korean history to conclude their three-day, two-night itinerary. One student who participated in the camp shared their thoughts, saying, “Listening to Grandmother Go Wan-sun’s testimony, I was deeply moved by the heartbreaking story of Bukchon Village,” and added, “I want to share what I learned with my friends so that such a tragedy is never repeated in our history.”

An official from the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education’s Student Education Center stated, “Through the process of directly seeing and experiencing historical sites, students must have correctly recognized the importance of peace and human rights,” and added, “In October, we plan to operate the ‘2nd Middle School Peace, Human Rights, and History Experience Camp,’ centered on the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 site, to carry on the region’s historical pride and spirit of righteousness.”
