Jeonnam Gwangju Special City to Innovate AI-Based Welding and Joining… Establishing a ‘Root Industry AX Hub’

‘Jeonnam Gwangju Welding Specialization Complex Activation Forum’ Held at National Assembly Members’ Office Building on the 11th - Approximately 30 Participants from Industry, Academia, Research, and Government Attended… Discussion on Building a Wide-Area Belt Connecting Shipbuilding, Marine, and Energy Beyond Automobiles and Home Appliances - Unanimous Call for Policy Support Including AI Transformation (AX), Fostering Specialized R&D Institutions, and Establishing Demonstration Infrastructure

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeonnam Gwangju Special City is setting out to improve the fundamental structure of the region’s root industries and leap forward as a hub for high-value-added future manufacturing by innovating welding and joining processes incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Jeonnam Gwangju Special City announced that it held the ‘Jeonnam Gwangju Welding Specialization Complex Activation Forum’ on the 11th at the 9th Conference Room of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Seoul. This forum was jointly hosted by National Assembly members Park Kyun-taek and Lim Moon-young, and jointly organized by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City and the Korea Welding & Joining Industry Association.

Last June, the city received designation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy for an area of approximately 329,829 square meters within the Pyeongdong 1st, 2nd, and 3rd General Industrial Complexes as a "Welding Specialization Complex." This forum was organized to foster the welding and joining root industries—the backbone of the region's manufacturing sector—into high value-added industries centered on AI Transformation (AX), and to maximize synergy with key regional industries such as finished vehicles and home appliances.

The event was attended by approximately 30 key figures from industry, academia, research institutes, and government, including National Assembly members Park Kyun-taek and Lim Moon-young, Chae Chang-ok, Director of the National Root Industry Promotion Center at the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), Kim Jong-myung, Vice President of Mokpo University, Lee Chang-woo, Senior Researcher at KITECH, Na Yong-geun, Chairman of the Korea Root Industry Association, Oh Jong-in, Research Director at HJ Heavy Industries, Kim Kyung-hak, Senior Researcher at LG Energy Solution, and Yoon Byung-hyun, Research Director at Sampyo Railway.

Lee Se-heon, Professor Emeritus at Hanyang University, delivered the keynote address during the first session of the forum on the topic of "Establishing an AX Welding Specialized Complex through Manufacturing Innovation of Next-Generation Technologies." Professor Lee emphasized, “Global manufacturing powerhouses such as the UK (1923) and Japan (1972) have led technology development and the transition to AX for over a century, centered around state-led specialized research institutes.” He added, “Korea, too, must foster specialized R&D institutions dedicated to welding and joining technologies, and based on this foundation, achieve AI-based joining technology innovation to realize industrial clustering and foster small but strong enterprises.”

In the designated discussion during Part 2, Professor Bang Hee-sun of Chosun University (Vice President of the Korea Welding & Joining Industry Association) served as moderator to address practical measures for revitalizing specialized industrial complexes. The expert panelists presented key tasks, including: promoting AX/DX-based technology support and R&D; establishing core infrastructure such as welding parts manufacturing cooperative centers; training customized professional personnel in conjunction with local universities; and creating a win-win cooperation ecosystem between large and small businesses. In particular, there was a consensus that, in line with the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, it is urgent to establish a ‘Welding and Joining Metropolitan Belt’ that organically connects Gwangju’s automotive and home appliance infrastructure with Jeonnam’s shipbuilding, marine, and energy industries, as well as to expand specialized R&D.

Political circles and local governments also pledged full policy and budgetary support to revitalize the welding specialized complex.

In his opening remarks, National Assembly member Park Kyun-taek stated, “Jeonnam and Gwangju possess sufficient capabilities to lead Korea’s manufacturing innovation and the AX transformation of the welding industry.” He added, “We will strengthen demonstration infrastructure so that companies can focus on on-site technology development, and we will actively support the necessary policies and budget to establish the specialized complex as a hub for ‘Physical AI’ manufacturing innovation.” In his welcoming remarks, National Assembly member Lim Moon-young stated, “For specialized industrial complexes to become the driving force behind the growth of local companies, support must be thoroughly ‘centered on corporate demand.’” He added, “Starting with this forum, I will spare no support at the parliamentary level to boost the competitiveness of the local manufacturing industry.”

Lee Dong-hyun, Head of the Future Automotive Industry Division at Gwangju Metropolitan City, Jeonnam Province, emphasized, “Based on the suggestions made by experts from industry, academia, research, and government at the forum, we will organically link and promote government support projects and new state-funded projects.” He further stated, “We will do our utmost to improve the fundamental structure of local foundational companies and expand a virtuous cycle ecosystem to the wider Jeonnam region.”
