Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education Steps Up to Secure the ‘Golden Time’ for ‘Protecting Student Lives’
Training on Respect for Life and Suicide Prevention Held for School Principals at Namak Complex Community Center; Invited Lecture by Professor Baek Jong-woo… “Attempts within 20 Minutes of Decision; Surrounding Attention and Control of Dangerous Means Are Crucial” - A Second Training Session Invited by Professor Kim Hyun-soo Scheduled for Suncheon on August 19
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education has set out to strengthen the capabilities of school principals to respond to the recently increasing mental health crises among students and to reinforce the safety net of schools.
The Office of Education announced that it held the ‘Training for Strengthening School Principals’ Respect for Life and Suicide Prevention Capabilities’ for principals in its jurisdiction at the Namak Complex Community Center on the 7th.
This training was organized to create a safe educational environment by detecting early signs of mental health crises in students and enhancing the crisis response capabilities of school administrators.
Professor Baek Jong-woo, President of the Korea Suicide Prevention Association and a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Kyung Hee University College of Medicine, was invited as a speaker for the day and delivered an in-depth lecture on the theme of "Schools That Protect Students' Lives."
Through his lecture, Professor Baek pointed out that "suicide prevention is not merely a mental health issue, but a broad topic encompassing social inequality, vulnerability, and community responsibility, as well as a matter of social justice."
In particular, Professor Baek noted that "approximately 48% of all suicide attempters act on their decision within 20 minutes," emphasizing that active attention from those around and the creation of an environment that controls risky means are paramount to safely navigating this critical "golden time."
He further urged school principals and staff to play a pivotal role as so-called "gatekeepers" by "seeing" to recognize verbal, behavioral, and situational warning signals sent by students in crisis, "listening" to actively empathize, and "speaking" to connect them to professional services. Following the lecture, a Q&A session took place based on questions submitted in advance by the attending school principals and difficulties encountered in the field of education. Participants engaged in active communication while exploring concrete measures to identify students at risk early and establish a practical response system.
An official from the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "The role of administrators on the front lines of schools is crucial for protecting the precious lives of students," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to build a comprehensive safety net for student mental health."
Meanwhile, the Office of Education plans to hold a second training session on August 19 at the Suncheon Bay Ecological Culture Education Center, inviting Professor Kim Hyun-soo—a professor of Psychiatry at Myongji Hospital and principal of the Growth School Byeol—to speak on the topic of "Understanding the Characteristics and Prevention of Adolescent Suicide."
