Deer Farms in Jeonnam and Gwangju Achieve Top Prizes, Including Grand Prize, at National Excellent Deer Contest
Osan Deer Farm in Gokseong Wins Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award for High-Quality Velvet Antler Yulls Weighing Over 25kg - Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Reaps Fruits from Consistent Bloodline Improvement Efforts, Including Support for Artificial Insemination Fees
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Deer farms in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions have earned the honor of winning the most awards nationwide at the National Excellent Deer Contest, sweeping five categories including the Grand Prize (Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award).
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced that local deer farms achieved outstanding results at the ‘2026 34th Excellent Deer Contest’ held in Asan, Chungnam, proving the excellence of Jeonnam and Gwangju deer to the entire nation. The Excellent Deer Selection Contest, organized annually by the Korea Deer Association, is an event designed to discover deer of superior bloodlines capable of producing high-quality velvet antlers and to enhance the competitiveness of local farms. This year, a total of 43 deer from 32 farms across the country competed fiercely for 12 categories, including the Grand Prize.
The highest honor, the Grand Prize (Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award), was awarded to Osan Deer Farm in Gokseong. The deer submitted by Osan Deer Farm received favorable reviews from the judging panel for its outstanding overall appearance, including velvet antlers weighing over 25 kg and the symmetry of its antlers. Osan Deer Farm was awarded the honor of being named the "Nation's Best Deer Farm," along with a plaque and a cash prize of 2 million won.
News of awards from other local farms followed in succession. Wangju Deer Farm in Goheung (CEO Kim Min-seop) received the Grand Prize (awarded by the Chairman of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation), while three other farms—Songsan Deer Farm in Gwangsan-gu (CEO Ryu Heung-kwon), Jinseong Deer Farm in Naju, and Haesong Deer Ranch in Sinan—each received Special Awards, demonstrating the strength of the livestock industry in Jeonnam and Gwangju.
This remarkable achievement is attributed to the fruition of continuous bloodline improvement projects, such as subsidies for artificial insemination fees for deer, and support measures aimed at increasing farm income, which have been promoted by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City.
An official from the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City stated, "The combined efforts of the farmers' hard work and the local government's bloodline improvement initiatives have yielded the best results in the nation," adding, "We will continue to expand the foundation for high-quality velvet antler production and spare no multifaceted support to enhance the income of deer farms."
