Launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Democratic-Progressive Superintendent Unified Nomination Committee… ‘Citizen-Led’ Unification Begins in Earnest

Over 520 Organizations United, Largest-Ever Education Citizens’ Alliance Formed – Final Announcement of the Unified Jeonnam-Gwangju Candidate Scheduled for May 3

(Break News Gwangju-Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = With the 2026 Superintendent election just over 40 days away, the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Democratic-Progressive Superintendent Unified Nomination Committee’ (hereinafter the Unified Nomination Committee), uniting the democratic-progressive camps of Jeonnam and Gwangju, has officially launched. ‘Participatory educational autonomy,’ in which citizens directly recommend and decide on the Superintendent candidate, has officially begun.

On the morning of the 25th, the Unified Nomination Committee held its inaugural general meeting and policy conference at Jeonil Building 245 in Gwangju. Along with establishing its organizational structure, the committee adopted a launch declaration and the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Education Bill of Rights.’ At the general assembly held on this day, four individuals were elected as co-standing representatives: Choi Song-chun, co-representative of the Jeonnam Federation for Environmental Movement; Jung Hee-gon, president of the Silver Teachers' Association; Kim Yang-im, former chairperson of the Gwangyang YWCA; and Ahn Seok, representative of the Gwangju Village Education Community Forum. The composition of the executive committee was also finalized.

Approximately 200 people attended the event, including representatives from civil society, labor, education, and parent organizations in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions, as well as citizens. Participants chanted slogans such as "Integrated education for Jeonnam and Gwangju created together by citizens" and "Democratic progressive education through the power of citizens," reaffirming their commitment to educational innovation.

A total of approximately 520 organizations participated in this Integrated Nomination Committee, including about 410 from Jeonnam and 110 from Gwangju. This is considered the largest-scale civic coalition in the history of superintendent elections and is expected to have a significant impact on the election landscape. Co-Standing Representative Choi Song-chun expressed confidence, stating, “The more participation from citizens of the city and province expands, the clearer victory will become.” Co-Standing Representative Jeong Hee-gon also emphasized, “2026 is the year the masters of educational power change,” adding, “We will create a new education system where citizens choose and control.”

Through its launch declaration, the committee presented ▲the establishment of clean educational power, ▲the restoration of the essence of public education, and ▲the overcoming of regional decline and educational disparities as core tasks. In particular, it declared a transition to a “communicative educational administration” that shares power with citizens, moving away from existing bureaucratic administration.

The “Jeonnam-Gwangju Education Bill of Rights,” adopted under the chairmanship of Co-Standing Representative Ahn Seok, contains visions such as building an educational ecosystem where students, teachers, and parents are the main actors, and resolving educational inequality.

The process of candidate unification, which is attracting significant attention, is also gaining momentum. Jang Gwan-ho, the candidate endorsed by the South Jeolla Provincial Nomination Committee, and Jeong Seong-hong, the unified candidate of the Gwangju Nomination Committee, agreed to conduct a public opinion poll over two days, from May 1 to May 2.

Based on the results of the poll, the Unified Nomination Committee plans to make a final announcement of the unified candidate for South Jeolla and Gwangju on the morning of May 3.
