The End of Ideology and the Warning Posed by 'Real Estate Class Voting'
Politics Must Go Beyond Representing the Interests of the Vested or Populist Gatherings...
- Kim Jong-beom, Professor Emeritus, Department of Public Administration, Kookmin University
The landscape of Korean politics is being reshaped on a national scale, following an economic fault line defined by "real estate assets" rather than ideology. High-priced housing clusters in major hubs across the country—including Gangnam and Yongsan in Seoul, Haeundae in Busan, and Suseong-gu in Daegu—have become core strongholds of the conservative camp, championed by the preservation of asset values and tax resistance. Conversely, tenants and the non-homeowning class, pushed to the outskirts unable to afford high housing costs, have remained as fluid swing voters ready to switch their votes at any time depending on their interests, while either defending the progressive camp's strongholds by demanding public infrastructure and a housing ladder for survival.
The normalization of such "real estate class voting" starkly reveals the true nature of Korean conservative parties. The reason why criticism among experts that "Korean conservatism is not true conservatism" persists is clear. While true conservatism should aim for values such as free market principles, the rule of law, and a responsible sense of community, Korean conservatism resembles a "reactionary group" seeking to safeguard the interests of the vested interests and maintain their privileges. As a result of self-preservation that rejects change and outdated, anachronistic inertia, the inherent values of liberal democracy that foster market dynamism have faded, leaving only defense mechanisms to protect private interests.
Under these current methods, securing a majority in nationwide elections is impossible. Unless a breakthrough is made to improve living conditions and provide substantial asset-building opportunities for suburban residents and the non-homeowning class—who constitute the absolute majority of the population—conservative parties will simply fail to keep up with demographic changes and become isolated. Moreover, despite the fading of the era of ideology, the continued immersion in outdated "red-baiting," blind "denigration of China," or baseless "election rigging conspiracy theories" is a self-destructive act that destroys the rationality of the conservative party. They must realize that such old-fashioned ideological rhetoric and divisive rhetoric only instill disgust in the moderates and the rational younger generation, and consequently, constitute the biggest internal obstacle that fundamentally blocks the possibility of regaining power.
Progressive parties also need self-reflection. Progressives must completely break away from the inertia of attempting to solve real estate issues through "punitive taxation" or "regulatory omnipotence." The attitude of attempting to suppress the public's desire for rising asset values through moral superiority has accelerated the exodus of the middle class. In a situation where the demographic cliff and household fragmentation are accelerating, if progressives fail to present empirical alternatives on how the expansion of public housing for the homeless can function as a ladder for asset formation beyond mere charitable welfare, they too will be shunned by the public.
Amidst the accelerating demographic cliff and household fragmentation, if they fail to present empirical alternatives on how the expansion of public housing for the homeless can function as a ladder for asset formation beyond mere charitable welfare, progressives will also be turned away from the public. A notable point is the emergence of a "conservative progressive" (or "rational centrist"). These voters no longer react blindly to progressive slogans or ideological polarization; instead, they vote strictly based on the value of their own assets and the future opportunity costs for their children's generation. As they are set to become the backbone of the economically productive population in future demographics, they will become "cold-blooded judges" who compel policy competition between the conservative and progressive camps.
The future direction of the political landscape depends not on grand narratives or slogans, but on the ability to implement actual policies. Amidst the waves of population decline and regional extinction, predicting victory based on statistical illusions is a complacent misjudgment. The demands of the youth—data-driven rational governance, the restoration of the housing ladder, and the establishment of a transparent tax system—are now matters of survival.
Politics must now move beyond representing the interests of the vested interests or engaging in populist mobilization. Only forces that protect the rights of established asset holders while simultaneously resolving the entrenched disparities in settlement conditions across the country and expanding fair economic freedom will secure the initiative in national affairs in the upcoming national elections. There is no future for a camp to reclaim power if it fails to cast off the shackles of outdated ideologies and present painful, practical alternatives. Demographic changes wait for no one. Unless the fundamental nature of policies and behaviors is changed immediately, one will simply be weeded out.
