From Webtoon PD to IP Business Entrepreneur… The Next Formula for the Content Industry Identified by Replyn CEO Kim Tae-young

The content industry appears glamorous. Hits generate buzz day after day, and new platforms emerge ceaselessly. However, the reality behind the scenes is different. Production costs continue to rise and competition has intensified, yet the probability of success has actually decreased. The questions posed by the market are also shifting. Rather than focusing on what to create, it has become more important to consider how to build a structure that generates sustainable revenue. Replynn is a company that started from precisely that question.

CEO Kim Tae-young worked in the webtoon industry for about six years as a PD and general manager. He experienced almost every stage of the content industry, from project planning and production to operations and business management. He said that during that process, he clearly felt the structural limitations of the content industry.

It takes a long time and a lot of money for a project to succeed. On the other hand, the burden of failure is also heavy. In a structure where results diverge drastically depending on box office success, he naturally began to contemplate 'sustainability.' Ultimately, he gave up a stable career and launched a startup in 2023. He explained that he wanted to be someone who creates a new system, rather than someone who works within a system created by others.

A structure that can endure first, rather than immense potential

His reason for choosing web novels over webtoons was ultimately rooted in concerns about 'sustainability.' While the webtoon market possessed high growth potential and mass appeal, it involved long production periods and a large number of involved personnel and stakeholders. It was a structure where the burden of time and cost required to complete a single work was inevitably significant.

On the other hand, web novels allowed for the verification of market reaction within a relatively short period, and the initial capital burden was also relatively low. The explanation is that, in the early stages of a startup, it was determined that generating revenue first and establishing a structure to sustain the company was more important than pursuing massive potential.

In particular, CEO Kim focused on the female-oriented romance market. The reason was that there is steady demand regardless of economic trends and active repeat consumption. Furthermore, he determined that it is a genre favorable for expanding into secondary content such as webtoons and videos.

CEO Kim did not define Replyn as a mere web novel distributor. He explained that the company's core direction is to go beyond the role of supplying works to platforms and instead connect web novel IP to other formats, such as webtoons and videos, creating a structure that generates continuous revenue in the process.

He viewed the core problem of the current content market not as a "lack of good content." Rather, he judged that the structural problem of good IP failing to be properly discovered and connected to the market is a greater issue. In fact, many production companies seek projects primarily based on popular works with proven box office success. This is done to reduce the time-consuming and costly review process. As a result, works with new potential repeatedly disappear without crossing the threshold of the market.

CEO Kim saw that this is precisely where Replin’s role lies. He believed that the very process of discovering undiscovered IP, identifying its commercialization potential, and connecting it with suitable production companies could become a competitive edge in the new content market.

Kim Tae-young, CEO of Replyn. Based on his field experience in the webtoon industry, he is designing a content business structure that expands web novel IP into webtoons, videos, and more.

Turning Inefficiency into Business Opportunities

Replin manages over 150 web novel IPs and connects them with production companies by systematically organizing plots, keywords, scalability, and target audiences for each work. Its structure goes beyond simply listing titles to presenting their commercialization potential. Some works have led to actual webtoon adaptation contracts, and numerous projects are currently in the production phase.

A representative example is a collaborative project targeting the Japanese market. This approach involves designing a web novel from the planning stage to reflect the preferences of Japanese readers, and then expanding it into a webtoon. This differs from the traditional method of exporting completed works. It is highly significant as a "preemptive global IP strategy" that involves planning and producing with the overseas market in mind from the outset. This case demonstrates that the export of K-content is shifting beyond simple translation and distribution to the stage of joint planning.

Replyn's competitiveness is also evident in its organizational structure. CEO Kim stated, "While I handle business strategy, external partnerships, and fundraising, Co-CEO Modahee oversees content planning and production."

In particular, the experience built in the romance genre and the network of writers are considered the company's core assets. Although it is a small organization, its roles are clear. He emphasizes dense growth rather than rapid expansion. The strategy is to fill the necessary positions at the right time and prioritize enhancing organizational understanding and execution capabilities.

He views the current content market not merely as a period of slowing growth, but as a time when structural reorganization is beginning in earnest. He believes that the market landscape is being reorganized during this process, and that new opportunities are emerging within it. Platform competition has passed its peak, and AI technology is changing the very methods of production. However, there is an unchanging essence: the fact that people always desire stories. Even if the format changes, the demand for narratives that move emotions will not disappear. Therefore, the forecast is that web novels will continue to maintain their position as the most powerful source IP.

"Now could be a time of opportunity. During periods when the market was overheated, works following similar formulas flooded the market. Now, production companies are reviewing each project more carefully and are ultimately refocusing on the compelling story itself. In other words, quality has become more important than quantity, and sustainability more important than speed."

The industry has come full circle and is returning to its essence.

CEO Kim Tae-young describes founding a company as a “bucket list in progress.” He believes that rather than chasing opportunities, it is more important to create a state where one can seize them when they arise. Perhaps this is where the essence of Replyn lies. Not a company that creates stories, but one that designs a structure where stories become an industry, generate revenue, and expand into the next market. Just as a single small ripple eventually changes the course, the next chapter of the content industry may begin in such a place.
