Okcheon County Activates Summer Emergency Disease Control System Until September

All-out Effort to Block Waterborne and Foodborne Infectious Diseases

The Okcheon County Public Health Center is launching a five-month intensive disease control response to prevent the risk of infectious disease outbreaks caused by rising temperatures and increased outdoor activities.

The Okcheon County Public Health Center announced that it will fully activate the "Summer Emergency Disease Control System" until September 30 and maintain a 24-hour emergency contact system to prepare for outbreaks of waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases.

During the summer, hot and humid weather promotes the proliferation of pathogens, and the increased use of mass catering services raises the likelihood of outbreaks of mass diarrheal diseases such as typhoid fever and bacterial dysentery. Accordingly, the Public Health Center has established an integrated emergency response system with 27 infection-vulnerable facilities within its jurisdiction and has completed full preparations to ensure immediate epidemiological investigations and disease control measures can be carried out in the event of an outbreak.

Waterborne and foodborne infectious diseases are primarily transmitted through contaminated water or food and are accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Special caution is required in communal living facilities, as infection can occur through the consumption of food contaminated with the excrement of patients or asymptomatic carriers, or through cross-contamination during the cooking process.

The Public Health Center emphasized six key rules for preventing infectious diseases: ▲ proper handwashing with soap under running water ▲ thoroughly cooking food ▲ boiling water before drinking ▲ washing vegetables and fruits in clean water before eating ▲ refraining from cooking if experiencing diarrhea ▲ disinfecting knives and cutting boards and using separate equipment for different food ingredients.

A Public Health Center official stated, "As the risk of infectious disease outbreaks increases with rising temperatures and humidity, personal hygiene management is paramount," adding, "We will do our utmost in our on-site disease control efforts to ensure residents can enjoy a healthy and safe summer."

Meanwhile, if you experience suspected symptoms related to an infectious disease or have any inquiries, you can contact the Infectious Disease Response Team at the Health Administration Division of the Okcheon-gun Public Health Center for detailed guidance.
