Yeongdong County Public Health Center Issues Advisory on Tick-borne Diseases During Outdoor Activities

Tick-borne infectious diseases, which typically begin to appear in the spring and occur intensively in the autumn, include scrub typhus and Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS). These diseases are caused by the bite of ticks infected with viruses or bacteria.

In 2025, there were 41 scrub typhus patients in Yeongdong County. While this represents a decrease compared to the 51 patients in 2024, it shows an overall gradual upward trend compared to 27 patients in 2022 and 35 in 2023. Consequently, caution is required as outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and farming increase during the spring season when ticks become active.

Since there are no preventive vaccines or specific treatments for tick-borne diseases, preventing bites is of the utmost importance. Preventive measures include wearing clothing that minimizes skin exposure, such as long sleeves, long pants, and arm sleeves; using insect repellent; avoiding grassy areas; showering immediately after going out; and shaking out and washing clothes after outdoor activities.

Tick-borne diseases often manifest within two weeks of outdoor activity with symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, diarrhea, and flu-like symptoms; these are frequently mistaken for a common cold, leading to delayed treatment. Therefore, it is essential to check for tick bites on the skin when showering after outdoor activities and to visit a medical institution promptly for treatment if suspicious symptoms appear. In particular, informing medical staff of any history of agricultural work or outdoor activities during the consultation helps ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Park Hye-kyung, Director of the Public Health Center, stated, "I hope you strictly adhere to preventive measures this spring as the weather warms up to enjoy safe and healthy outdoor activities."
