Rising Seawater Temperatures in Summer… Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Urges Caution Against ‘Vibrio Septicemia’
"Strictly Observe Preventive Measures, Including Refraining from Eating Raw Seafood and Avoiding Contact with Seawater on Wounds" - 38 Cases and 17 Deaths in Jeonnam Over the Past 5 Years… High Fatality Rate Requires Special Caution
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = As the risk of ‘Vibrio Septicemia’ increases alongside the full-scale rise in seawater temperatures during the summer, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has urged residents to strictly adhere to preventive measures, such as refraining from eating raw seafood and avoiding contact with seawater on wounds.
Vibrio septicemia is a Class 3 statutory infectious disease caused by Vibrio vulnificus, which inhabits coastal marine environments such as seawater, mudflats, and seafood. It is a representative summer infectious disease that typically begins to appear from April to June, when seawater temperatures rise above 18°C, and occurs most frequently from August to October.
The main routes of infection are consuming contaminated seafood raw or undercooked, or coming into contact with contaminated seawater while the skin has open wounds.
Symptoms such as fever, chills, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea appear after an incubation period of 12 to 72 hours. In most cases, severe skin lesions, including rashes, swelling, and blisters on the legs, develop within 24 hours of symptom onset. If treatment is delayed, the condition can rapidly progress to sepsis and tissue necrosis; therefore, if suspicious symptoms appear, one must visit a medical institution immediately for treatment.
Due to its high fatality rate, special caution is required for high-risk groups with underlying conditions. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, over the past five years, 284 patients have been reported nationwide, resulting in 114 deaths. Jeonnam Province also recorded a high fatality rate, with 17 deaths out of 38 patients. ※ High-Risk Groups for Vibrio Septicemia
Individuals with liver disease, chronic diseases such as diabetes, alcohol dependents, those taking corticosteroids or anticancer drugs, patients with malignant tumors, aplastic anemia, or leukemia, organ transplant recipients, and immunocompromised patients, etc.
Given the geographical and cultural characteristics of the Jeonnam region, which boasts the longest coastline in the nation and high consumption of mudflats and seafood, practicing preventive measures is of paramount importance. Accordingly, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to continuously monitor Vibrio bacteria in coastal areas, operate an integrated surveillance system with cities, counties, and medical institutions, and carry out preventive publicity activities, while further strengthening customized publicity targeting high-risk groups.
Jeong Gwang-seon, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, emphasized, “Given Jeonnam’s extensive coastal area and active marine activities during the summer, it is of the utmost importance to strictly adhere to preventive measures against Vibrio septicemia.” He added, “In particular, residents with underlying conditions such as liver disease or diabetes must take special precautions, such as thoroughly cooking seafood before consumption and avoiding contact with seawater if they have open wounds.”
