Backend.AI가 만든 효율의 전환
“처음 ‘Make AI Accessible’로 시작했고, 스케일을 키우면서 ‘Make AI Scalable’을 더했죠.

Shin Jeong-gyu, CEO of Lablup, "From one GPU to thousands, on a single platform"
– Identifying the limitations of GPU-scale-centric AI infrastructure and suggesting the need for a paradigm shift towards 'management and efficiency'.
– Maximizing resource utilization and improving cost structure through GPU virtualization and integrated management technology via Backend.AI
– Open source-based global expansion strategy, a startup narrative of surviving five years without revenue, and securing a leading position in the AI infrastructure market
Rableup CEO Shin Jeong-gyu
Starting AI does not require thousands of GPUs. One university that began with just three or four GPUs expanded to dozens within three years, and some major domestic corporations operate clusters with thousands of GPUs. The problem is that management becomes more complex as the number of GPUs increases. Resource conflicts become more frequent, and utilization rates drop. Sometimes, a single failure can bring the entire operation to a halt. Shin Jeong-gyu, CEO of Lablup, states that the core of Backend.AI is “managing everything on the same platform, whether there is one GPU or thousands.” Over 110 sites worldwide are currently using this platform.
“GPUs Increase, But Efficiency Declines”… Structural Limitations of AI Infrastructure
CEO Shin majored in both physics and computer science at POSTECH. During his doctoral studies, he researched computational neuroscience, which models the way the brain processes information using mathematics.
“I started using computers in the third grade of elementary school. Majoring in both physics and computer science simultaneously has been a great help in my current work.”
Lablup started in April 2015 with three people: CEO Shin Jeong-gyu, CTO Kim Jun-ki, and Research Director Park Jong-hyun. Their academic backgrounds were all different. CTO Kim Jun-ki majored in Computer Science at KAIST, while Research Director Park Jong-hyun studied Biophysics at POSTECH. CEO Shin’s background combined physics and computer science with neuroscience. Although they attended different schools and worked in different labs, their common ground was open source. They developed a blogging engine called Textcube together with many others. It was a project that became the foundation for Tistory and Google Blogger. It was through this community that they met CTO Kim Jun-ki, and after he finished his Ph.D., they persuaded him to "start a business together," leading to the founding of the company.
The company name Lablup means to upgrade the lab. I faced many difficulties due to infrastructure issues while conducting AI research during my time as a researcher.
He explained that the demand for computing resources is increasing exponentially. He said it was their assessment in the early days of the startup that without the infrastructure to support this, bottlenecks would become severe. CEO Shin added, "We predicted that the corporate market would open up around 2020 and then spread to individuals, and that prediction turned out to be correct."
The biggest difficulty in the early days of starting the business was surviving for five years without any revenue.
Supply didn't begin until the end of 2019, and the enterprise market opened in 2020. When we founded the company, we said that we would become a profitable company starting in 2020, five years later, and that is exactly what happened.
“GPU sharing technology”… The transformation of efficiency created by Backend.AI
Looking back, CEO Shin said that his good fortune was entering the field early. He received the Presidential Commendation for his contributions to the development of the software industry in 2018, and the Industrial Medal at the 25th Software Industry Day in December 2024. In 2025, he also received the Grand Prize at the Korea Software Technology Awards.
I am currently serving as a member of the Technology Innovation and Infrastructure Subcommittee of the Presidential Committee on National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, as well as a Google developer expert (in two fields: AI and Cloud).
One of the core technologies is a proprietary technology called container-level GPU virtualization. This allows a single GPU to be divided into multiple units, enabling multiple users to use it simultaneously. He explained, "While there are various ways to share GPUs, we control GPU resources within a container using a software method called CUDA API interception," adding, "We have registered patents for this technology in Korea, the United States, and Japan." In fact, in the case of Kookmin University, 12 GPUs were virtualized to allow 80 students to use them, raising the average GPU utilization rate to the 90% range.
The most common problem in large-scale clusters is the performance difference between GPUs. Even with the same model, heat generation and computation speeds vary by instance, and in distributed learning, the slowest GPU determines the overall speed.
To be specific about the cost-saving effects, he emphasized that data center GPUs cost tens of millions of won per unit, and the latest products reach hundreds of millions of won.
By incorporating Backend.AI, you can extend the lifespan of existing equipment to 4 to 5 years by switching between various uses—starting with training, then moving to inference, and finally to educational purposes. Since this delays the replacement cycle, the cost-effectiveness improves significantly.
Backend.AI is currently being used at over 110 sites worldwide. By industry, in the IT and electronics sector, companies such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics use it for R&D infrastructure and in-house GPU cloud.
“Opening the Market with Open Source”… Lablup’s Global Strategy and Expansion
“In the telecommunications and cloud sectors, our clients include KT, KT Cloud, NHN Cloud, and Naver Cloud, and cloud companies began adopting the solution starting in 2023. In the financial sector, institutions such as the Bank of Korea and Shinhan Bank use it to operate large-scale language models in closed network environments.”
In the public and research sectors, GIST, ETRI, KIST, and the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service are utilizing Backend.AI, while in the mobility industry, Korean Air and Hyundai Mobis are using it.
Lablup is participating as an infrastructure partner of the Upstage Consortium in the independent AI Foundation Model Project organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT. He stated, “We operated an infrastructure with 504 NVIDIA B200 GPUs at the SK Telecom Haein Cluster using Backend.AI. We completed the training, which was originally expected to take 120 days, in just 66 days,” adding, “Five teams were selected out of 15 consortia, and three teams remained after the first stage evaluation, with the Upstage Consortium being one of them.”
The revenue model is a software subscription model that charges an annual fee per GPU. CEO Shin explained that it can be viewed as a billing system similar to Adobe's.
By 2025, the share of subscription revenue has risen to 82%, and the share of recurring revenue to 95%. In terms of revenue breakdown, domestic sales account for approximately 75%, while overseas sales make up about 25%.
Shin Jeong-gyu, CEO of Lablup, is explaining the strategies for AI infrastructure efficiency and GPU virtualization technology.
CEO Shin stated that they are not developing their own semiconductors. What Lablup does is support the integration of heterogeneous AI semiconductors.
NVIDIA GPUs are, of course, supported, and on top of that, you can integrate and manage over 12 types of accelerators on Backend.AI, including AMD, Intel Gaudi, and domestic NPUs such as Rebellion, FuriosaAI, and TenTorrent.
Since GPU virtualization technology is software-based, the principle from the beginning was a design that is not dependent on specific hardware, and it can be expanded via a plug-in method even when new accelerators are released. When asked why they are moving in this direction, CEO Shin pointed out that NVIDIA acquired an AI workload management platform called Run:ai for about $700 million in 2024.
“Run:ai will be more tightly integrated into the NVIDIA ecosystem, which poses a potential constraint for customers using non-NVIDIA hardware. However, companies want a platform that allows them to flexibly utilize various AI semiconductors without being tied to a specific hardware manufacturer.”
“Capturing the ‘layer above,’ not just the GPU”… The significance of the hardware independence strategy
A subsidiary was established in San Jose, USA in early 2025. Currently, client countries include Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Thailand, Brazil, and Europe.
The overseas market opened up through exhibitions. We are participating in CES for four consecutive years (2023–2026) and MWC for four consecutive years (2023–2026), serving as a Silver Sponsor for NVIDIA GTC for three consecutive years (2024–2026), Supercomputing Conference (SC) for three consecutive years (2023–2025), and also participating as a Silver Sponsor for KubeCon for two consecutive years.
CEO Shin stated that when they attend exhibitions and introduce their services, global companies recognize them first and propose business. Representative examples include Intel visiting the GTC exhibition hall and Japan's Kyocera Mirai Envision proposing collaboration at MWC.
He explained that global competitors include the U.S. company Rescale and the privately held ClearML, and that Israel's Run:ai was acquired by NVIDIA.
“Originally, there were fewer than five significant players in this field globally, and Big Tech acquired several of them. Independent companies like ours that go down to the operating system level are rare.”
He revealed that the biggest difficulty for a Korean startup is the issue of recognition.
You can view it as us overcoming that through technological prowess. We estimate the technological gap with latecomers to be about four years, and our goal is to maintain this.
The company has attracted investment three times in total. It raised angel investment in 2015, 2 billion won in Pre-Series A in 2017 (Kakao Ventures, Stonebridge Ventures), and 10.5 billion won in Series A in 2022–2023 (LB Investment Lead, IBK Industrial Bank of Korea, K2 Investment Partners, Daesung Venture Capital), bringing the cumulative investment to 12.65 billion won.
“Based on K-IFRS, 2025 revenue is projected to be 6.83 billion KRW. Since 2021, the average annual growth rate has exceeded 57%, and we experienced rapid growth, more than doubling year-on-year in both 2022 and 2024.”
CEO Shin stated that the company has achieved an operating surplus for six consecutive years since 2020.
"In a situation where most specialized companies with AI solutions and services are unable to generate profits, we are spending relatively less investment capital because we can consistently generate revenue and operating profit."
He said that they are preparing for an IPO and are currently considering the technology special track in Korea.
I have been involved in open source since the Textcube days, and I have been active since a time when there were not many communities in Korea that directly started and developed open source projects.
Backend.AI was released as open source in 2017, and it is open to everyone, except for some enterprise features.
When asked if open source leads to copying, CEO Shin explained that this field requires a level of engineering that is difficult to reproduce even by looking at the code, and above all, open source helps maintain a sense of the market.
“AI is ultimately a matter of ‘intelligence supply’”… The next 10 years envisioned by Lablup
“The AI market changes rapidly. Open source is important in terms of providing the software customers want at the right time. Also, when expanding overseas or forming technology partnerships, the process of partnering with global big tech companies was easy because Code introduces our technological capabilities on our behalf.”
He also continues to contribute to the open source community. He introduced himself as a longtime Silver Member of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and the Linux Foundation, and as having joined the Python Software Foundation as a sponsor in February of this year.
Since it has been in this market since before ChatGPT appeared, the impact of the AI boom on Lablup has been direct and positive.
With the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022, we reached 100 million users faster than ever before; since then, GPU demand has exploded, and the market demand for GPU virtualization technology has grown significantly.
CEO Shin explained that starting in 2024, the center of gravity of the AI market has rapidly shifted from model training to inference and services.
The share of inference workloads in total AI computing is projected to rise from approximately one-third in 2023 to about two-thirds in 2026. Since inference must run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it can account for 80–90% of the total cost of AI systems, highlighting the importance of eff
