현재 여수시는 글로벌 공급과잉과 중동 정세 불안 등으로 석유화학산업이 직격탄을 맞으면서 현장 노동자들을 중심으로 고용 지표가 급격히 악화하고 있다. 이에 따른 지역 상권 위축과 서민경제 침체 우려도 가중되는 상황이다.
이에 전남광주통합특별시는 여수시와 함께 지난 7월 23일 고용노동부에 '고용위기지역' 지정을 정식 신청하고, 정부 차원의 종합적인 고용안정 대책 마련을 요구해왔다.
이어 5일 진행된 고용노동부의 현지실사 현장에서도 여수시 및 유관기관과 공동 대응에 나서 현장의 심각한 고용위기 상황을 상세히 설명하고 지정 필요성을 피력했다.
