Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Gwangju, Jeonnam, Proposes Expansion of Eco-friendly Agricultural, Livestock, and Fishery Product Certification at Cabinet Meeting

Conveying voices from the field at the Cabinet meeting on the 28th... "Need to revitalize antibiotic reduction and eco-friendly certification programs" – Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong responds, "We will modernize livestock facilities and strengthen pesticide safety management" – Status as the nation's No. 1 eco-friendly production area... "Limitations in local finances make increased national funding urgent"

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Gwangju, Jeonnam, actively proposed to the central government at the Cabinet meeting the "revitalization of eco-friendly certification programs" to reduce antibiotic use and ensure food safety.

Attending the 32nd Cabinet meeting held at the Government Complex Seoul on the 28th, Mayor Min conveyed the opinion that "revitalizing eco-friendly certification programs on the ground is urgent to reduce antibiotic use and supply safe agricultural, livestock, and fishery products to the public." This proposal was prepared by reflecting the vivid voices of farmers and fishermen in the Jeonnam Gwangju region, the nation's largest production area for eco-friendly agricultural, livestock, and fishery products.

In response, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryeong stated, “Expanding certification for eco-friendly livestock products is essential to reduce antibiotic use in livestock products.” She added, “To this end, we will strive to modernize livestock facilities while working together with farmers to ensure the Positive List System (PLS) for the safe use of pesticides is successfully implemented in the field.”

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City is currently providing multifaceted support for the modernization of livestock facilities, including establishing its own Green Livestock Promotion Fund and paying certification inspection fees for eco-friendly livestock products and incentives for organic livestock certification. However, relying solely on local finances has limitations, making it urgent to expand state funding for related projects and convert them into state-funded initiatives.

The Special City is also continuously requesting the government to convert the support program for eco-friendly fishery product certification fees to state funding and to expand state support for the supply of vaccines to prevent aquatic animal diseases in the eco-friendly fishery sector.

Meanwhile, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City boasts the largest certified area for eco-friendly agricultural, livestock, and fishery products in the nation. As of June 2026, eco-friendly agricultural products (organic and pesticide-free) account for 35,374 hectares, or 48.9% of the national total, while eco-friendly livestock products (organic and antibiotic-free) account for 2,044 households, or 26% of the national total. In particular, eco-friendly fishery products (organic and antibiotic-free) occupy 92.4% of the national total (13,910 hectares, 259 cases), establishing an unrivaled foundation for eco-friendly production.
