Mayor Min Hyung-bae Visits National Assembly to Make All-Out Effort to Secure 2027 State Budget and Resolve Local Issues

Meeting with Special Committee Chairman Lee Kwang-jae, he proposed support for 10 key projects including the Honam Semiconductor Cluster, AI, and transportation; requested substantial support in the form of 20 trillion won in government financial incentives; and is pursuing all-out cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and Budget and local political circles.

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam and Gwangju, visited the National Assembly to request comprehensive support for resolving local issues and securing the 2027 state budget.

On the 11th, Mayor Min met with Special Committee Chairman Lee Kwang-jae at the National Assembly and urged active cooperation from the National Assembly regarding key local issues and major state-funded projects. With the government budget formulation entering its final stages, he moved swiftly to ensure that local projects proceed without setbacks during the upcoming National Assembly deliberation process. During the meeting, Mayor Min first requested prompt support for the successful establishment of the "Honam Region Semiconductor Cluster." Mayor Min stated, "At the government's second public-private joint inspection meeting on mega-projects held the previous day, President Lee Jae-myung emphasized that we are in a situation where we must wage a 'blitzkrieg' rather than a 'speed campaign.'" He added, "The full cooperation of the National Assembly is urgent for the early commencement and operation of the semiconductor cluster."

He also requested continued attention to ensure that the 20 trillion won in financial incentives promised by the government to the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City translates into financial support that can effectively drive regional development.

Regarding next year's government budget, the city has focused on proposing a total of 10 key projects to the National Assembly. Major projects include the construction of the Yeongam-Gwangju Expressway, the establishment of the National NPU Computing Center in Gwangju, the creation of a K-Culture Content Tech Town, the establishment of an AI-Content Convergence Support Center, the pilot development of a dried seaweed cluster, the revitalization of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Cluster, support for AI data center testbeds, the construction of infrastructure for mega-project AI data centers, the establishment of a dedicated tech center for autonomous vehicles, and the creation of a metropolitan ecological zoo.

This visit to the National Assembly is an extension of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City's all-out efforts to secure state funding, which have been ongoing since last month. On July 24, Mayor Min met with Minister of Planning and Budget Park Hong-keun to request budget allocation for key projects, and on July 30, he discussed joint response measures to resolve major pending issues through a budget policy consultation with the Democratic Party of Korea's Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Chapter. The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to expand its cooperation network to the National Assembly, following government ministries and local political circles, with the goal of securing as much funding as possible for key projects by the time the government's budget proposal is finally approved.

Mayor Min Hyung-bae emphasized, "Key projects, including semiconductors and AI, are directly linked to the future competitiveness of Jeonnam-Gwangju," adding, "I will personally visit both the government and the National Assembly to achieve results. I will exert all-out efforts in close cooperation with central ministries, local lawmakers, and the National Assembly until the budget proposal is finally approved."
