HMM, South Korea’s No. 1 and world’s No. 8 shipping giant, has signed a headquarters relocation agreement to Busan with its labor union. The Democratic Party of Korea’s Busan Metropolitan City Party hailed it as a “signal flare for completing Busan as a maritime capital,” voicing support alongside local citizens.
The move fulfills a presidential campaign promise by President Lee Jae-myung, rapidly advanced by Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Jeon Jae-soo to bear fruit in just one year. The party expressed profound respect for HMM’s decision, which supports sustainable national development and Busan’s revival.
Following H-Line and SK Shipping, HMM (annual revenue ₩12 trillion) joins the shift, laying the groundwork for Busan’s maritime hub status. It is projected to create over 20,000 new jobs and generate ₩15 trillion in economic ripple effects over the next five years.
