<우리의 요구>

The Association for the Study of Korean Literature held a commemorative event marking the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation, urging historical reflection through literature and the abolition of pro-Japanese literary awards.
On the afternoon of the 15th, at 4 p.m., the Association for the Study of Korean Literature held the "7th Anniversary Ceremony of the Association for the Study of Korean Literature and August 15th Commemoration Ceremony" in front of the Seodaemun Prison History Museum in Seoul.
This event was organized to reflect on the historical significance of liberation and to remember the history and spirit of the nation through literature. The event served as a gathering of literary figures to re-examine the literary community's historical reflection and social responsibility, featuring poetry readings and the 발표 of a "Declaration on the Abolition of Pro-Japanese Literary Awards."
The event was emceed by poet Choi Kyu-ri, with congratulatory remarks delivered by Kim Min-cheol, Director of the Institute for Research in Collaborationist Activities, and poet Hong Il-seon. Following this, poets Kang Min-sook and Park Won-hee read the "Declaration on the Abolition of Pro-Japanese Literary Awards," expressing their demand for the abolition of such awards.
The Association for the Study of Korean Literature held a commemorative event to mark the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation, calling for historical reflection through literature and the abolition of pro-Japanese literary awards. Poets Moon Chang-gil, Jo Hee, Yang Hae-yeon, and Lee Cheol-gyeong participated in the poetry reading session. Through their poems, they conveyed messages regarding the meaning of liberation and the history of the nation.
The celebratory performance featured soprano Kim Yun-ah, a saxophone ensemble composed of Kim Dong-ho, Lee So-rim, and Kim Yun-chan, and poet Jang Woo-won, presenting a stage where music and poetry harmonized.
An official from the Society for the Study of Korean Literature stated, "To mark the 81st anniversary of liberation, we have organized a gathering of literary figures at this historical site to reflect on the meaning of liberation and to consider how literature should remember and reflect upon history and society."
He added, "We hope this event, featuring both poetry and music, will serve as an opportunity for citizens to reconsider the meaning of liberation," and continued, "We will also continue to urge for the abolition of pro-Japanese literary awards."
<Abolish the Pro-Japanese Writers Memorial Literary Award!>
Toward the future of today's Korean literature, we are moving forward toward globalization. In this reality, a monster known as "pro-Japanese literature" still lurks in the dark corners of modern Korean literature. The true identity of this monster is "collaboration literature," which glorified and praised the colonial rule of Imperial Japan while promoting and inciting war mobilization. Pro-Japanese literature can be described as an anti-national and inhumane act that went beyond mere sympathy with Japanese imperialism; it involved driving one's own people into becoming expendable pawns of a war of aggression and sacrificing them.
However, not a single one of the pro-Japanese writers who pledged allegiance to the Emperor under the banner of "serving the nation through writing" has been properly re-evaluated or held historically accountable, even 80 years after liberation. On the contrary, they have remained established as the mainstream of the Korean literary world, enjoying significant influence and status. Consequently, the crimes of their anti-national acts have been obscured, leading to a reality where literary awards honoring the achievements of these pro-Japanese writers under the name of "literature" have established themselves as prestigious honors in the Korean literary community.
In light of this reality, the true nature of their anti-national acts has been obscured, and literary awards celebrating the achievements of these pro-Japanese writers have become established as authoritative prizes in the Korean literary world. The bizarre behavior of elevating those who betrayed their country and nation as literary role models is undeniably a shameful affair, with few precedents found anywhere in the world.
We clearly remember our past history. To fulfill the nation's fervent desire to purge pro-Japanese collaborators, the Special Investigation Committee on Anti-National Activities was established immediately after the government was founded. However, the committee was disbanded by the Syngman Rhee regime, which was protected by pro-Japanese forces, and the golden opportunity to realize historical justice vanished in vain. Had the committee fulfilled its original mission, the writers who collaborated with the Japanese imperialists would also have found it difficult to escape their historical responsibility.
The pro-Japanese writers who escaped condemnation have gone a step further without a single word of apology or remorse, arguing that "their literary assets or value should not be obscured by their unavoidable pro-Japanese past actions." Furthermore, their works have been brazenly included in textbooks, securing a status that represents Korean literature. As if this were not enough, we have ended up in a bizarre world where even commemorative literary awards have been established and are being operated to honor their literary achievements.
Opposition to commemorative projects honoring pro-Japanese literature and writers is nothing new. In 2001, the year following the death of Seo Jeong-ju, a symbolic figure of pro-Japanese literature, the establishment of the Midang Literary Award was pushed forward; the "Korean Writers Association," a representative progressive literary group, actively opposed it. However, the literary establishment, centered around a few famous writers, condoned Seo Jeong-ju under the pretext of "forgiveness and harmony."
Commemorative literary awards for pro-Japanese writers are not merely a "literary issue," but a "historical issue." This is because the influence of pro-Japanese literature on our society's historical awareness and spiritual culture is by no means insignificant, making it impossible to confine the matter solely to the realm of art.
If literature is a mirror reflecting the times and society, then literature that collaborated with colonial rule and wars of aggression cannot be free from that historical responsibility. <Our Demands>
1. Immediately abolish the Pro-Japanese Writers Memorial Literary Award! We will not sit idly by while Korean literature—which inherited the spirit of the anti-Japanese independence struggle, the anti-dictatorship democratization movement, and national and people's literature—is further contaminated or distorted by pro-Japanese literature.
2. The Chosun Ilbo, which has organized the ‘Pro-Japanese Literary Award,’ must apologize to history and the people, and immediately cease the operation of the Dongin Literary Award and the selection of its winners!
3. For the future of Korean literature and the establishment of a true literary spirit, we urge the literary community to listen to the voices of writers and the public, and to resolutely refuse the judging and awarding of the ‘Pro-Japanese Literary Award’!
4. We will uphold the conscience of traditional Korean literature by inheriting the spirit of the anti-Japanese independence struggle, the anti-dictatorship democratization movement, and national and people's literature.
