Preventing 'Ocean Desertification' on the East Coast… Ocean Campus and KHK Accelerate Restoration of 30-Hectare Marine Forests

Based in Jiksan 2-ri, Uljin and Ipam 2-ri, Pohang… Establishing a 'Citizen-Led' Model from Seaweed Transplantation to Carbon Capture Research

A private organization and a corporate social responsibility (CSR) firm have joined forces to resolve the chronic issue of "ocean desertification" (bleaching) on the East Coast. Ocean Campus, a social cooperative, announced that it is launching the "2026 Citizen-Led Marine Forest Restoration Project" to create large-scale marine forests in the waters surrounding Uljin and Pohang, backed by sponsorship from the Korea Health Management Association (hereinafter KHK).

This project is a case where KHK’s support for marine environmental protection, which began in 2025, has borne fruit. This year, the restoration area will be expanded to key hubs along the East Coast, with plans to focus on restoring approximately 30 hectares (ha) of water near Jiksan 2-ri in Uljin-gun and Ipam 2-ri in Pohang-si.

Going beyond simply planting seaweed, systematic processes are being carried out in parallel, including: ▲ cultivating and transplanting native species such as kelp and Ecklonia cava; ▲ managing herbivorous organisms (such as sea urchins) that feed on seaweed; ▲ improving underwater substrates; and ▲ researching the carbon capture efficiency of seaweed.

"The Sea Saved by Citizens"... Sea Planting Day Campaign Attracts Attention

Ocean Campus recently held a citizen-participatory campaign to commemorate Sea Planting Day and set out to raise public awareness. Participants experienced the process of directly transplanting seaweed such as Ecklonia cava, witnessing firsthand the severity of ocean desertification.

In particular, in Jiksan 2-ri, Uljin, local female divers and elderly members of the fishing community are directly participating in the harvesting and drying of seaweed. This is being recognized as a "win-win restoration model" where environmental restoration leads to the revitalization of the local economy and job creation.

Seok Da-hyun, Chairperson of Ocean Campus, emphasized, “The restoration of sea forests is a long-term infrastructure project that redesigns the foundations of the collapsed underwater ecosystem, distinct from one-time tree planting,” adding, “Based on the continuous support from the Korea Construction Association, we will complete a restoration model where the local community and citizens are the owners.”

Ocean Campus plans to regularly monitor the growth status of the restored sea forests and continue data analysis work to prove their value as blue carbon (a carbon sink for marine ecosystems).
