Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that it will host the ‘7th Island Day Commemorative Event’ for four days from August 6 to 9 at the Yeosu World Expo Site under the theme ‘Recharge Romance, Islands!’

This event is expected to combine the unique, sentimental local image of Yeosu’s night sea with the natural resting functions of the islands, offering special inspiration and healing to visitors and vitality to island residents as active members of the local community. The National Commemorative Ceremony, the highlight of the event, will be held on August 6 at 7:30 PM at the special stage of the Yeosu World Expo site. Approximately 3,000 people are expected to grace the occasion with their presence, including island residents gathered from across the country, Hwang Ki-yeon, Vice Mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City; Kim Min-jae, Vice Minister of the Interior and Safety; Seo Young-hak, Mayor of Yeosu; National Assembly members Ju Cheol-hyeon and Cho Gye-won; as well as government and local government officials, National Assembly members, and representatives from related organizations.

During the event, various exhibition halls will be operated throughout the Yeosu World Expo site, offering a comprehensive overview of the islands' nature, culture, food, and policies. These include the "Local Government Pavilion," where major local governments from across the nation participate to showcase the unique charms of their respective islands; the "Theme Pavilion," which highlights the islands' historical footprints and distinctive ecosystems; and the "Policy Pavilion," which shares the visions for future island development from central government ministries and related agencies, all designed to deliver systematic information.

Extensive collaborative programs designed to bring island residents and tourists together have also been prepared. A venue for policy and communication will be established, including the ‘Island Residents’ Lunch Show’ and ‘Island Residents’ Trot Contest’ to foster harmony among island residents, the ‘International Island Forum’ to explore directions for academic development, and the ‘Extraordinary Session of the Council of Heads of Island Local Governments’ to discuss cooperation measures among local governments.

In addition, to convey the value of islands to future generations, programs for family visitors have been significantly enhanced, such as the ‘Children’s Island Expedition,’ the ‘National Children’s Island Drawing Contest,’ and children’s puppet shows and magic shows. Furthermore, a diverse range of hands-on events will take place, including the ‘Baekseom Baekgil’ Walking Competition, a screening of the movie ‘Pasi,’ and the ‘Island Romantic Excursion.’

In particular, the Food Zone, designed to captivate the palates of gourmets, will feature a large number of participation from star chefs such as Oh Se-deuk and Lim Hee-won, as well as culinary masters from the Yeosu region. By developing and showcasing special menus that highlight the unique flavors of fresh, pristine island ingredients, they plan to widely promote the exceptional taste and distinctive charm of island cuisine to foodies across the nation. Meanwhile, August 8, known as ‘Island Day,’ is a national commemorative day designated following the amendment of the ‘Island Development Promotion Act’ in 2018 to preserve and promote the infinite potential for development and value of islands. The number ‘8’ carries the meaning of symbolizing the infinite possibilities (∞) of islands that continue endlessly. Starting with the first event in 2019, commemorative ceremonies have been held annually, touring local governments that possess islands.

Hwang Ki-yeon, Administrative Vice Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, “It is very meaningful that Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City, which was the first in the nation to propose the establishment of Island Day in 2016 and successfully held the first commemorative ceremony in 2019, is welcoming its seventh ceremony in Yeosu, which embraces 365 beautiful, jewel-like islands.” He added, “I hope this event serves as a significant opportunity for the entire nation to enjoy the romance conveyed by Yeosu’s beautiful islands and sea, and furthermore, to empathize with and share the ecological and cultural values possessed by islands.”
