Naju City Signs 33.7 Billion Won ‘Rural Agreement’… Rural Regeneration in Eastern Region Begins in Earnest
Signed with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs… Improvement of Living Conditions in Nampyeong, Geumcheon, Sanpo, Bonghwang, and Dado by 2030; Creation of Sustainable Rural Spaces and Balanced Regional Development Linked with Existing Yeongsan River Riverside Living Zones
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Naju City, part of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, is launching a rural regeneration project in its eastern region to expand living services and improve residential conditions in rural areas.
Naju City announced that it signed a rural agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs at the ‘2026 Rural Agreement Signing Ceremony’ held at the Sejong Convention Center on the 24th. This agreement is a follow-up measure to the city's selection in the ‘2025 Rural Agreement Public Contest Project’ organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs last year. It was established to systematically implement plans for the restructuring and regeneration of rural spaces through cooperation between the central government and local governments. The Rural Development Agreement is a system in which the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and local governments jointly establish mid-to-long-term rural development plans and provide comprehensive support for the expansion of social infrastructure and the revitalization of the local economy.
Under this agreement, Naju City will invest a total of 33.7 billion won (including 23.6 billion won in state funding) from 2026 to 2030. The project sites are five towns and townships in the eastern region: Nampyeong-eup, Geumcheon-myeon, Sanpo-myeon, Bonghwang-myeon, and Dado-myeon.
Key initiatives include the Rural Center Revitalization Project, the Basic Living Hub Creation Project, and the Living Conditions Improvement Project for Vulnerable Areas. Through these measures, Naju City aims to strengthen resident-centric living services—such as culture, welfare, and care—and restore regional vitality.
Furthermore, the city plans to promote balanced regional development by organically linking this eastern region project with the ‘Yeongsan Riverside Living Area Revitalization Project,’ centered on Gongsan-myeon and currently being pursued through the 2021 Rural Development Agreement. Naju Mayor Yoon Byung-tae stated, “This rural agreement is a promise to lay the foundation for residents to live in a more convenient and livable environment,” adding, “We will proceed without setbacks by establishing a dense network of cultural, welfare, and care services across the five towns and townships in the eastern region so that residents can tangibly experience changes in their daily lives.”
He further emphasized, “We will create a sustainable rural community where people want to ‘live, work, and stay’ by linking with the existing Yeongsan River waterfront living area project, as well as by jointly promoting rural space improvement projects and policies for returning to farming and rural life.”
