Kim Byung-sam Leads Yeongcheon Mayoral Election Outside Margin of Error in Both Approval and Likelihood… Running Unconventionally Backed by People Power Party Support

In the final opinion poll for the Yeongcheon mayoral race in North Gyeongsang Province conducted ahead of the local elections, People Power Party candidate Kim Byung-sam was found to be leading outside the margin of error in both approval ratings and likelihood of winning. Analysis suggests that the overwhelming mobilization of the People Power Party's support base is driving Candidate Kim's uncontested lead.

According to the results of an opinion poll commissioned by Break News Daegu Gyeongbuk to the professional polling agency Jowon C&I, conducted over two days from May 24 to 25 targeting 500 men and women aged 18 and older residing in Yeongcheon, 49.8% of respondents supported Candidate Kim Byung-sam as the next mayor. Following him were Independent Candidate Choi Ki-moon with 35.2% and Democratic Party Candidate Lee Jung-hoon with 11.8%. The survey showed that 0.9% responded "no preferred candidate" and 2.2% responded "don't know."

When analyzed by gender and age, Candidate Kim showed particular strength among women (56.0%), those in their 60s (58.6%), and those aged 70 and older (54.8%). On the other hand, Candidate Choi was in a close race with or slightly ahead of Candidate Kim among those aged 18–29 (38.4%) and those in their 50s (40.5%).

By region, Candidate Kim led evenly in both Zone 1 (Kim Byung-sam 49.0% vs. Choi Ki-moon 35.3%) and Zone 2 (Kim Byung-sam 50.6% vs. Choi Ki-moon 35.1%), maintaining a lead without regional disparities. Furthermore, when examining the mobilization of supporters by party affiliation, Candidate Kim received overwhelming support of 69.7% from the People Power Party. On the other hand, Candidate Choi garnered high support among supporters of the Democratic Party of Korea (39.6%), the Cho Kuk Innovation Party (70.0%), and the New Reform Party (75.2%), as well as among independent voters (54.1%).

The results were similar in the question regarding the likelihood of election, asking "Who do you think will win?" regardless of support. Candidate Kim Byung-sam recorded 50.0%, securing a majority, while Candidate Choi Ki-moon stood at 38.6%, resulting in a gap of 11.4 percentage points between the two candidates. Candidate Lee Jung-hoon remained at 6.6%.

Among male respondents, Candidate Kim Byung-sam (44.7%) and Candidate Choi Ki-moon (44.9%) were found to be locked in a close battle with a difference of only 0.2 percentage points; however, among female respondents, Candidate Kim (55.6%) overwhelmingly defeated Candidate Choi (32.0%), leading the overall landscape. 66.6% of People Power Party supporters predicted Candidate Kim's victory, while 53.3% of Democratic Party supporters viewed Candidate Choi's chances of winning as high.

In terms of party support in Yeongcheon City, the People Power Party maintained a firm lead with 58.8%, well exceeding the majority. Following closely behind was the Democratic Party of Korea at 20.0%, followed by the New Reform Party at 2.7%, the Progressive Party at 1.2%, and the Cho Kuk Innovation Party at 0.9%. The unaffiliated electorate, identifying as having "no preferred party," was tallied at 12.2%. The People Power Party led other parties across all age groups and regions, including those aged 18–29 (44.3%) and those in their 30s (44.7%). The percentage of respondents who expressed an intention to vote in this election reached a staggering 97.1% (90.8% active voting, 6.3% passive voting). In particular, looking at the candidate support rates within the "active voter group" (90.8%) who stated they would definitely vote, Candidate Kim Byung-sam received 51.0% and Candidate Choi Ki-moon received 35.0%, suggesting that Candidate Kim is expected to have an advantage even among voters who are highly likely to go to the polling stations.

This survey was commissioned by Break News Daegu Gyeongbuk and conducted by Jowon C&I over two days from May 24 to 25, 2026, using an ARS public opinion poll method with virtual mobile phone numbers, targeting men and women aged 18 and older residing in Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The sample size was 500, the response rate was 17.1%, and the margin of error was ±4.4%p at a 95% confidence level. Statistical adjustments were made by applying weights (post-weighting) by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population statistics of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as of the end of April 2026.
