(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = On the morning of the 11th, one week before the 46th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement, Kim Dae-jung, the candidate for Superintendent of Education for the Integrated Jeonnam and Gwangju Metropolitan City, visited the National May 18 Democratic Cemetery in Buk-gu, Gwangju, to pay tribute to the spirits of the martyrs of May and continued his full-scale election campaign. Prior to the visit, Candidate Kim wrote in the guestbook, "I will inherit the will of the May 18 martyrs and surely achieve Republic of Korea's K-Education and democratic education," expressing his firm determination for future educational innovation. After laying flowers and offering incense at the memorial plaza, Candidate Kim took time to pay tribute to the martyrs of May.

Subsequently, Candidate Kim visited the graves of ▲Yoon Young-kyu, the first chairman of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) ▲Martyr Jeon Young-jin (a third-year student at Daedong High School at the time) ▲Martyr Yoon Han-bong (the last wanted fugitive of the May 18 Uprising) ▲Martyr Park Kwan-hyun (then president of the Chonnam National University Student Council), reflecting on the spirit of those who sacrificed themselves for democracy.

In particular, Candidate Kim shared special sentiments in front of the grave of Mr. Yoon Young-kyu, who served as the first chairman of the KTU. He recalled, "The process of founding the KTU with him is still vivid in my memory," adding, "There were harsh times when Mr. Ko Jin-hyung and I were in charge of supplies, crossing back and forth over the mountains while he was living in seclusion in Hansan Village, Muan, to evade the authorities."

Candidate Kim also emphasized his lifelong dedication to the democratization of education, stating, "Although I had the opportunity to return to teaching in 1994, I chose to remain with the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (KTU) and walked the path of helping the late President Kim Dae-jung, who supported the legalization of the union, win election."

Meanwhile, Candidate Kim, running for the inaugural integrated superintendent of education, is stepping up his efforts to win votes by campaigning on the core value of "expanding democratic citizenship education." He is expanding his support base by presenting key pledges, such as the construction of a self-governing "Hall of Democracy Education" and the permanent establishment of a "Youth Participatory Constitutional Amendment Program" to enshrine the spirit of the May 18 Uprising in the Constitution.

Candidate Kim stated, "The spirit of May should not remain in the past, but must live and breathe within the future education of our children," adding, "I will definitely create a model of democratic education befitting the status of the integrated special city."
