Gwangju City Forms ‘K-Autonomous Driving National Team’… ‘Starting Engine’ to Leap to World-Class Demonstration City

Signing of MOU with 7 Public, Private, and Research Institutions; Deployment of 200 Autonomous Vehicles by 2028; Linking with National AI Data Center; Focusing on Verifying World’s First ‘E2E-based AI Technology’

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City has joined hands with leading domestic mobility institutions and companies to transform itself into a world-class autonomous driving demonstration city, extending beyond Korea. The city aims to serve as a forward base for the leap to becoming one of the "Top 3 Autonomous Driving Powerhouses" by combining artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with the capabilities of the automotive industry.

On the 13th, Gwangju City signed the "Korea Autonomous Driving Team MOU" at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center to ensure the successful implementation of the "Autonomous Driving Demonstration City Development Project."

This agreement involves public institutions, including Gwangju City, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, as well as key private companies leading the domestic autonomous driving industry, such as Hyundai Motor Company, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, RideFlux, and Autonomous A2Z.

These organizations have agreed to establish a strategic cooperative framework and pool their expertise to develop Gwangju into a world-class model city for autonomous driving demonstrations. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will oversee policy and administrative support, while the participating companies will be responsible for practical operations—including vehicle supply, real-time monitoring, and insurance dedicated to autonomous driving—as well as establishing safety nets.

This project is the nation's first large-scale autonomous driving demonstration project, investing 61 billion won in state funds over three years from 2026 to 2028. According to the plan, a total of 200 autonomous vehicles will be deployed within Gwangju to conduct pilot operations on actual roads.

In particular, this demonstration will focus on verifying "E2E (End-to-End) based AI technology," where artificial intelligence integrates and performs the entire process from perception to control. Gwangju City plans to maximize technical completeness by gradually expanding the demonstration zone, leveraging the region's unique characteristics of a mix of urban and rural areas.

Gwangju City will provide full support using GPU resources from the "National AI Data Center" to create an environment where autonomous vehicles can learn from the vast amount of data they collect in real time. Furthermore, the city plans to fully equip corporate support infrastructure, including on-site workspaces, a control center, dedicated garages, and charging stations within the Gwangju Future Car Mobility Promotion Agency.

The city's strategy is to link this project with the "National AI Mobility Pilot City" and the "Future Car Industry Innovation Cluster" to drive a major transformation of the automotive industry, a pillar of the local economy. By creating a virtuous cycle where demonstration data leads to parts manufacturing and platform technology development, the city aims to foster the co-growth of local companies. Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung emphasized, “Gwangju, which has made the flower of democracy bloom, will now become the standard for Korea’s future cities,” adding, “Based on the strength of Gwangju, which possesses two complete vehicle factories, Kia and GGM, we will concentrate all our capabilities on completing the AI and mobility industries through autonomous driving demonstrations.”
