Gwangju City Analyzes Status of Single-Person Households… "Surpasses 230,000 Households, Customized ‘Solo Together’ Support"

In-depth analysis of economic, consumption, and lifestyle patterns through pseudonymized combination of public and private data; single-person households surged 19.7% compared to 2020… Utilized as foundational data for promoting specialized policies by autonomous district

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City announced the "Gwangju Metropolitan City Report on the Status of Single-Person Households" on the 26th, which provides a sophisticated analysis of the economic conditions, consumption status, and lifestyle patterns of single-person households in the region.

This report is significant as it is the result of an analysis combining public data from the National Data Agency with pseudonymized private data from SK Telecom, Shinhan Card, Korea Credit Bureau (KCB), and SK Broadband. It establishes objective foundational data for policy formulation through statistical and scientific analysis without personal identification.

According to the analysis results, Gwangju City's population structure is changing rapidly. As of 2024, Gwangju's total population decreased by 2.9% compared to 2020, while the number of single-person households surged by 19.7%, rising from 193,000 to 232,000.

By region, Yongbong-dong in Buk-gu had the highest concentration of single-person households, while Seonam-dong in Dong-gu showed the highest proportion. In Im-dong, Buk-gu, both the total population and single-person households rose in tandem due to redevelopment, and Hanam-dong in Gwangsan-gu also exhibited a distinct upward trend in single-person households.

In terms of economic aspects, 63.8% of single-person households fell within the annual income bracket of 20 million to 40 million won. Households with no outstanding loans accounted for 63.4%, and the rate of loan and credit card delinquents was low at 1.1%. However, analysis revealed that 33.0% of delinquents had small overdue amounts of 3 million won or less, indicating a need for detailed attention to this issue. The average monthly card expenditure per person was calculated to be approximately 950,000 won. Major consumption sectors were found to be online retail (26.6%), general retail (12.2%), and restaurants (11.0%), clearly confirming the trend of contactless consumption among single-person households.

A noteworthy point is the result of a comparative analysis between single-person households residing in Gwangju and those who moved out to other regions (12,086 people). While single-person households that moved to other regions had a higher proportion of high incomes and card spending (an average of 1.05 million won) compared to those residing in Gwangju, they were found to have a higher potential for social isolation, characterized by having no one to call or a lower frequency of going out.

In contrast, 86.8% of single-person households residing in Gwangju maintained active communication, making phone calls to 31 or more people per month. However, there was a tendency for IPTV viewing time to increase and outing frequency to decrease among those with lower incomes or older age groups.

Based on the results of this analysis, Gwangju City plans to accelerate the ‘Valuable Gwangju Life Even Alone (Solo Together)’ project, which reflects the age and gender characteristics of single-person households.

Currently, various services tailored to local characteristics are being operated year-round through family centers in each district, including ▲Dong-gu’s ‘Eat:On Culture & Kitchen’ ▲Seo-gu’s ‘1.5 Steps Out into the World’ ▲Nam-gu’s ‘Fly Up’ ▲Buk-gu’s ‘Middle-aged Single Up!’ ▲Gwangsan-gu’s ‘Mind, Relationship, Life, & Recovery Package.’

Park Hye-mi, the Director of Data Informationization, stated, “This analysis is highly significant in that it precisely derived the actual lifestyle patterns and consumption patterns of single-person households,” adding, “We will actively utilize these indicators as foundational data for the development of customized services and policy implementation for single-person households in the future.”
