Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency Launches ‘Special Security Operations’ to Respond to Violent Crimes in Gwangsan-gu… Until June 3

Crime Prevention and Response Strategy Meeting Held… Over 1,900 Personnel, Including Volunteer Patrols, Deployed, and Visible Patrols Strengthened

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency is conducting ‘special security operations’ until the 3rd of next month to alleviate citizens’ anxiety caused by recent violent crimes in Gwangsan-gu and to prevent recurrences such as copycat crimes.

On the 12th, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency held a ‘Crime Prevention and Response Strategy Meeting’ (pictured) at the agency’s Mudeung Hall, presided over by the Head of the Community Safety Department, and finalized field-oriented security measures focusing on densely populated areas and crime-vulnerable zones.

The core of these special security operations is the strengthening of ‘visible patrols’ that citizens can feel. The police plan to establish a comprehensive safety network by collaborating with local police, the Metropolitan Prevention Patrol, and 1,957 personnel from 86 volunteer crime prevention organizations.

In particular, they will significantly increase patrol frequency in areas where citizens feel most anxious, such as school routes, parks, and areas with a high concentration of private academies. Simultaneously, they will improve crime prevention facilities, including CCTVs, through precise assessments of crime-vulnerable areas.

The practical response system for preventing violent crimes will also be strengthened. While activating a preemptive response system for violent incidents involving weapons, they will maintain an all-out response system that mobilizes all available personnel upon a 112 call.

Furthermore, the plan is to strengthen management of high-risk groups regarding relationship-based crimes, such as stalking, and to prevent further harm by concentrating investigative resources on protection activities targeting women and the socially vulnerable.

An official from the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency emphasized, "We will move beyond the existing approach of responding only after receiving a report and focus on restoring the police's fundamental function of crime prevention," adding, "We will further strengthen visible preventive activities so that citizens can lead their daily lives with peace of mind."
