Gwangju Nam-gu to 'Brighten' Yangnim and Baegun-dong Alleys… Replacing Aging Streetlights with LEDs

40 Million Won in Project Funding, Intensive Replacements in May and June… Expected to Improve Nighttime Pedestrian Safety and Prevent Crime

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Nam-gu is launching a project to replace aging streetlights to alleviate residents' inconvenience regarding nighttime travel and to create a safe pedestrian environment.

On the 28th, Nam-gu announced, "We will significantly improve the nighttime pedestrian environment by replacing 41 aging streetlights in the Yangnim-dong and Baegun-dong areas that are over 15 years old with high-efficiency LED lighting."

This project was organized to improve energy efficiency by maintaining outdated equipment in the densely populated residential areas of Yangnim-dong and Baegun-dong, and to create a pleasant environment that helps prevent crime by improving illumination on side streets.

Nam-gu plans to invest 40 million won in project funds to focus on intensive replacements in areas with high pedestrian traffic. The full-scale work will take place from this coming May to June. The newly installed LED security lights are characterized by being much brighter and spreading light more uniformly compared to existing sodium lights. This minimizes blind spots in alleyways and ensures clear visibility, which is expected to significantly improve residents' perceived safety. Furthermore, due to lower power consumption, a dual benefit is anticipated: energy conservation and carbon emission reduction.

In addition to this project, Nam-gu plans to continue replacing aging lighting facilities within the district with LEDs by the end of this year, investing a total budget of 100 million won. Currently, the LED replacement rate for streetlights in Nam-gu has reached 100%, while for security lights it stands at approximately 72%. Nam-gu plans to further increase the security light replacement rate through this ongoing initiative.

A Nam-gu official emphasized, "This project holds great significance in creating an environment where residents can return home safely, even late at night," adding, "We will continue to do our utmost to create a safe living environment by pursuing continuous facility improvements, focusing on vulnerable areas."
