The Gyeongsangnam-do Institute of Health and Environment has raised concerns regarding the prevention of summer marine infectious diseases after confirming the first case of Vibrio vulnificus of the year on the Sacheon coast. Particular caution is required for individuals with underlying conditions, such as liver disease and diabetes, as the fatality rate is high.

The Gyeongsangnam-do Institute of Health and Environment announced that it confirmed the final isolation and identification of the first Vibrio vulnificus in the province this year following the examination of seawater samples collected from the Sacheon coast on June 29.

Vibrio vulnificus proliferates actively in coastal areas during the summer and early autumn when seawater temperatures rise above 18°C. Infection can occur by consuming contaminated raw seafood or through contact with open wounds in the seawater, causing symptoms such as fever, chills, vomiting, and diarrhea. Individuals with underlying conditions, particularly liver disease, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease, are at a high risk of developing sepsis.

Although the first detection this year occurred somewhat later than last April, the institute analyzed that the bacteria have entered a full-scale proliferation period due to the recent rise in seawater temperatures. To prevent infectious diseases, the institute plans to continuously monitor seawater, mudflats, and shellfish in seven coastal areas within the province—including Sacheon, Goseong, Changwon, Tongyeong, Hadong, Namhae, and Geoje—until this coming November for the occurrence of pathogenic Vibrio bacteria.

To prevent Vibrio septicemia, seafood should be thoroughly cooked at temperatures above 85°C, and contact with seawater should be avoided if one has open wounds. Additionally, it is crucial to strictly adhere to personal hygiene rules, such as washing hands and cooking utensils thoroughly after handling seafood.

Kim Young-rok, Head of the Infectious Disease Research Department at the Gyeongsangnam-do Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "Vibrio septicemia is rare in healthy individuals but has a very high fatality rate among high-risk groups." He added, "We will do our utmost to protect the health of provincial residents by continuing surveillance of pathogenic Vibrio bacteria and promptly sharing information with relevant agencies."
