[Break News Gyeonggi South = Suwon Reporter Lee Hyun-jun] Gyeonggi Province is implementing an urban forest remodeling project this year targeting aging green spaces in 13 locations across 10 cities and counties, including Gogi Neighborhood Park in Yongin.

This project focuses on restoring the functions of green spaces totaling 150,000 square meters through the supplementation of trees and the improvement of their growth environments.

Urban forest remodeling is a project designed to revitalize existing green spaces where trees have aged over time or where functions have been lost due to natural disasters. Instead of acquiring new land, the approach involves improving the growth environment of existing spaces and planting additional trees to rapidly normalize green space functions. Going beyond simple facility repairs, the project concentrates on tree planting and restoring the forest's natural resilience to create green resting areas within residential zones for residents.

Major project sites this year include Byeongjeom Neighborhood Park in Hwaseong and the buffer green space in Hagui-dong, Uiwang, where extensive renovations covering 20,000 square meters will be carried out. Since 2023, Gyeonggi Province has been steadily expanding urban leisure spaces by investing billions of won in annual budgets to ecologically restore aging green spaces throughout the province, including Seongnam, Hwaseong, and Goyang.

Once this renovation is completed, it is expected to bring not only tangible improvements to the climate and environment, such as mitigating heatwaves and reducing the urban heat island effect, but also an increase in recreational spaces that residents can enjoy in their daily lives.
