The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that it attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ‘2026 Food Safety Cooperation Forum (FSCF)’ held in Shanghai, China, from May 12 to May 13, and shared South Korea’s digital-based food safety innovation policies and international cooperation achievements.

The forum was attended by 21 APEC member economies and international organizations to discuss food safety policies and cooperation measures. Following its role as the chair of the forum last year, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety participated in the meeting this year as a vice-chair along with Vietnam.

At the plenary session held on May 12, forum activities and achievements, the current status of cooperation with international organizations, new projects, and the food safety policies of each member economy were discussed.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety shared the results of the workshop on advanced food safety management innovation cases, which was a major focus at last year’s forum, and introduced major digital-based policies including the early warning system for food poisoning, the smart HACCP system, and the food nutritional component database. Furthermore, the ministry shared cases of joint responses among member economies, such as the food hazard information collection and analysis system and the current status of foodborne antimicrobial resistance management.

At the food safety regulatory workshop held on May 13, there were various presentations on topics such as technological innovation for smart food safety management and border inspection cooperation to promote safe food trade.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety introduced food safety management policies utilizing digital technologies, including the electronic evaluation for import safety (SAFE-i24), ‘Food QR’ which conveniently provides accurate food information to consumers through QR codes, and ‘Smart HACCP’ using Internet of Things technology.

In addition, the ministry participated in a panel discussion themed ‘Safe Imported Food and Export Enterprise Registration System’ to discuss policy implementation experiences and cooperation directions with member economies. In particular, regarding China’s ‘government blanket registration system for overseas food enterprises’ which will be implemented on June 1, the ministry shared South Korea’s current response status and discussed future operational directions.

Minister of Food and Drug Safety Oh Yu-kyoung stated, “This forum was a meaningful opportunity to share digital-based food safety innovation achievements with the international community and to expand the values of the 2026 APEC, which are ‘openness’, ‘innovation’, and ‘cooperation’, in the food safety sector.” She added, “We will continue to widely promote the excellence of our food safety management system through continuous international cooperation and regulatory harmonization with overseas regulatory authorities.”
