Samsung SDI has secured another major order worth more than 1 trillion won (Around $689 million) in the U.S. energy storage system (ESS) market. As demand for ESS increases rapidly due to the expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the spread of renewable energy, the company appears to be accelerating its push into the North American market.
Samsung SDI said on March 16 that its U.S. subsidiary, Samsung SDI America (SDIA), signed a contract to supply batteries for ESS to a major U.S. energy company. The contract is valued at about 1.5 trillion won, or roughly $1 billion. The company will supply the batteries in stages from this year through 2029.
The contracted batteries will be produced at the StarPlus Energy (SPE) plant, a joint venture between Samsung SDI and Stellantis located in Indiana in the United States. The products to be supplied include nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) based ternary batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. The company plans to supply the two types of batteries sequentially.
Large-scale orders have recently continued to emerge in the U.S. ESS market. At the end of last year, Samsung SDI signed a contract worth more than 2 trillion won to supply LFP batteries for ESS to a U.S. energy infrastructure development and operation company. Earlier this year, the company also secured another large battery supply deal in the United States.
Samsung SDI is the only non-Chinese manufacturer of prismatic ESS batteries in North America. Prismatic batteries offer higher structural stability and superior durability compared to pouch-type batteries. Samsung SDI is targeting the U.S. ESS market by emphasizing fire safety and reliability as its key strengths.
