LG Energy Solution announced on April 3 that it has become the first battery manufacturer to join the vehicle software (SW) open market platform “SDVerse.” The company plans to accelerate its push into the software-defined vehicle (SDV) market by disclosing five software solutions on the open market platform.
SDVerse is the first business-to-business (B2B) platform for transactions among vehicle software companies, established under the leadership of General Motors (GM), the No. 1 automaker in the United States, Magna of Canada, one of the world’s top three auto parts manufacturers, and Wipro, a global IT services company from India. As an open ecosystem in which original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), major global parts suppliers, and software developers can trade software in a single space, it is facilitating the transition to SDVs.
Through SDVerse, LG Energy Solution disclosed five software solutions: battery platform software, a safety diagnostic calibration tool, a cell data-free state diagnostic model, a battery life simulator, and a battery degradation mitigation strategy.
The battery platform software is a service designed to comprehensively analyze key indicators related to battery condition, such as battery degradation and life. Its distinguishing feature is that it implements LG Energy Solution’s existing battery management system (BMS) technology in a form optimized for the SDV environment.
The safety diagnostic calibration tool is software that enables safety status diagnostics and simulation verification based on battery data. By providing algorithms that allow companies to analyze and operate data in-house without relying on external parties, it minimizes the risk of data leakage and helps secure security competitiveness.
The cell data-free state diagnostic model is algorithm-based software that estimates battery condition based on battery field data and corrects errors using machine learning, enabling accurate diagnosis of battery degradation status without relying on cell test data.
The battery life simulator is an algorithm that numerically predicts the battery degradation process and estimates changes in battery performance under various conditions. It can predict changes in fast-charging performance resulting from battery degradation and simulate battery health based on a physical model by monitoring changes in the battery’s voltage, current, and temperature.
The battery degradation mitigation strategy is an algorithm specialized for electric vehicle battery life management. It quantitatively analyzes how a user’s driving and charging habits affect the rate of battery degradation, checks battery status in real time, and provides guidance for long-term battery use.
LG Energy Solution plans to showcase its battery services and software technologies in earnest in the SDV market through SDVerse, thereby solidifying its position as a “total solution provider.”
Currently, through its battery management total solution (BMTS) business brand “B.around,” the company provides cloud and AI-based solutions for safety diagnostics, degradation, and life prediction, and it is operating a broad battery services business, including the always-on battery diagnostic service B.lifecare and the one-time battery assessment service B.once. In October last year, it won the “CES Innovation Award” in the pure software category for the first time in the battery industry with its battery life improvement technology “Batt.Re” solution.
