Park Jong-han, Coordinator for Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held the “7th Korea-Kyrgyzstan Economic Joint Committee” in Seoul on May 21 with Bakyt Sydykov, Minister of Economy and Commerce of Kyrgyzstan.

At the latest Economic Joint Committee meeting, both sides assessed bilateral relations, which have recently been developing rapidly with trade at the center, and shared the view that it is necessary to redouble government-level efforts so that cooperation can lead to concrete outcomes in various areas, including expanded trade and investment, development cooperation, environment, energy and resources, and agriculture.

The Korean side highly evaluated the development of bilateral relations in a friendly atmosphere, as high-level exchanges have continued, including a telephone conversation between the two countries’ leaders in August ’25, after the two sides established a “Comprehensive Partnership” on the occasion of President Japarov’s official visit to Korea in December ’24.

The Kyrgyz side welcomed the recent sharp increase in bilateral trade and expressed hope that investment by Korean companies in Kyrgyzstan would increase further. In response, the Korean side emphasized the importance of stable activities by Korean companies and institutions and a sound investment environment, and requested the Kyrgyz side’s interest and cooperation regarding difficulties faced by Korean companies operating there. In this process, both sides shared the view that it is necessary to strengthen communication among relevant institutions to promote substantive cooperation by sector and to continue developing a cooperation framework to support corporate activities.

Both sides assessed the achievements made in cooperation centered on such areas as environment, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, public administration, and health and sanitation, and agreed to pursue more strategic and effective development cooperation by linking Kyrgyzstan’s National Development Strategy and the strategic objectives of the Korean government’s grant aid.

In addition, both sides agreed to expand cooperation in the fields of climate change, water resources, and forests, where the potential for cooperation is high. In particular, as a follow-up measure to the “Agreement between the Republic of Korea and the Kyrgyz Republic on Cooperation in the Field of Climate Change (concluded in December ’24),” they agreed to hold the 1st Korea-Kyrgyzstan Joint Committee on Climate Change Cooperation within this year and to move forward in earnest with international greenhouse gas reduction projects.

Lastly, both sides assessed the increase in people-to-people exchanges through education, tourism, and labor since the launch of direct flights between the two countries in June ’23, and agreed to make efforts so that such exchanges can continue to expand.

Immediately after the meeting, the chief delegates of both sides signed the agreed minutes containing measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation in each sector.

The latest Economic Joint Committee is evaluated as having served as an opportunity to further deepen the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries by comprehensively reviewing the status of substantive cooperation and discussing directions for expanding it ahead of the “1st Korea-Central Asia Summit,” scheduled to be held in Seoul on September 16-17 this year.
