Inje University Ilsan Paik Hospital said it recently established a new Hernia Center and began its operations on Monday.
The Hernia Center will primarily focus on laparoscopic surgery and provide minimally invasive treatment. It will also perform tension-free hernia repair procedures involving the insertion of surgical mesh inside the abdominal wall. The hospital said the approach can help reduce postoperative pain, shorten recovery time, and lower the risk of recurrence.

For patients with complex conditions, including recurrent hernias and incisional hernias that develop after abdominal surgery, the center plans to offer robotic surgery. Robotic-assisted procedures allow for more precise operations by providing surgeons with a magnified three-dimensional view and enhanced instrument control, enabling accurate restoration of anatomical structures.
The center has established an integrated treatment system covering the full spectrum of care, from diagnosis and surgery to postoperative management. Treatment strategies will be tailored to each patient based on a comprehensive evaluation of factors such as the location and size of the hernia, the condition of the abdominal wall, and a history of recurrence.
The Hernia Center will be led by Professors Choi Kyeong-woon and Eom Sang-soo of the Department of Surgery. Professor Choi has performed more than 1,000 hernia surgeries.
Hospital Director Choe Won-joo said, “We will use the launch of the Hernia Center as an opportunity to further strengthen expertise in hernia treatment in the region and continue expanding patient-centered, personalized medical services.”
