Hyundai Rotem announced on May 7 that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the American defense technology company Anduril to advance its weapon systems.

The signing ceremony was held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, attended by key officials from both companies, including Hyundai Rotem President Lee Yong-bae and Anduril CEO Brian Schimpf.

Through this collaboration, the two companies plan to focus on developing an integrated Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) command and control system.

Hyundai Rotem will integrate Anduril’s AI operating system, ‘Lattice’, into its unmanned platforms, such as the ‘HR-Sherpa’ multi-purpose unmanned ground vehicle and its multi-legged walking robots. Lattice acts as an AI brain that uses sensor data to track targets in real-time and helps to autonomously assess battlefield situations. The introduction of this system will enable organic swarm control between manned combat vehicles and unmanned robots.

The establishment of a mobile counter-drone control system is also cited as a key collaborative task. The system will operate by having Anduril’s reconnaissance and interceptor drones detect enemies, after which Hyundai Rotem’s wheeled armored vehicles will analyze the situation to support a commander’s decision-making. Anduril possesses proven technological capabilities, having already signed an operational integration contract with the U.S. Army.

A Hyundai Rotem official emphasized, “The future defense market is rapidly shifting from traditional manufacturing to a form where software systems are integrated. This collaboration will be an opportunity to secure unparalleled technological competitiveness by enhancing the interoperability between weapon system hardware and AI software.”
