South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction Co. announced on Monday that it has secured an order from a European shipowner for two 10,100 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container ships worth a total of 357.2 billion won ($241.86 million).
The 10,000-TEU-class container ship is the largest size that HJ Shipbuilding & Construction can build at its Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, based on its proprietary eco-friendly container ship designs in the 7,700–9,000 TEU range.
The latest contract follows the company’s first order of two 10,000-TEU-class vessels in February.
The newly ordered vessels are also eco-friendly container carriers designed to minimize greenhouse gas emissions and will be equipped with scrubbers—exhaust gas cleaning systems—to comply with environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
They will also be fitted with an alternative maritime power (AMP) system, allowing the ships to shut down their engines while docked and receive electricity from shore, thereby reducing air pollution in ports.
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction also said that it has completed the development of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel propulsion model of the same ship type, preparing to meet shipowners’ demands.
“By establishing eco-friendly container ship designs and high-efficiency production systems, our Yeongdo Shipyard is now capable of building four 10,000-TEU-class large container ships in succession,” said Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yoo Sang-cheol. “We will further strengthen our competitiveness by pursuing a selective order strategy focused on profitability and delivering high-quality vessels on schedule.”
