South Korea’s HD Hyundai Electric Co. is entering the global eco-friendly high-voltage circuit breaker market with its domestically developed sulfur hexafluoride (SF6)-free high-voltage circuit breaker.
HD Hyundai Electric announced on Sunday that it recently completed the final approval testing for its 145-kilovolt (kV) SF6-free high-voltage circuit breaker under customer supervision.
The product is scheduled to be supplied to a substation operated by a Swedish power company.
SF6, a representative fluorinated greenhouse gas, has been widely used in high-voltage power equipment due to its excellent insulation and interruption performance.
However, with its global warming potential (GWP) 23,500 times greater than that of carbon dioxide, it has become subject to increasingly stringent regulations.
In particular, the European Union revised its fluorinated greenhouse gas regulations in 2024, gradually strengthening restrictions on the use of such gases, including SF6.
Starting in 2032, the use of SF6 in high-voltage circuit breakers above 145 kV will be completely banned.
HD Hyundai Electric has been focusing on expanding its lineup of SF6-free high-voltage circuit breakers.
It has already completed development of 72.5-kV, 145-kV, and 170-kV models, and plans to finalize its full product lineup by 2028 before aggressively expanding orders.
