[Here is the English version of the article] Former Chairman Kim Dong-ho Honored with the Korean Cinema Award at Busan International Film Festival
The Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) has named Kim Dong-ho, former Chairman of the BIFF, as the recipient of the "2026 Korean Cinema Award." The Korean Cinema Award is presented annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the development and global promotion of Korean cinema.
A Pioneer Who Led the Festival’s Inception and Growth
The festival organizers selected Kim Dong-ho to honor his legacy of laying the groundwork for Korean cinema's globalization from a desolate landscape for international film festivals, transforming BIFF into a central hub for Asian cinema.
Starting his career in 1961 at the Ministry of Public Information (currently the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), Kim served as Director of Culture, Director-General of Planning and Management, President of the Motion Picture Promotion Corporation, founding President of the Seoul Arts Center, and Vice Minister of Culture, cementing the foundation of Korea’s cultural administration.
In 1996, he was appointed the founding Festival Director of BIFF, leading its successful launch with formidable drive. His decisive stand against pre-screening censorship in the festival's early days protected artistic freedom and independence, earning the trust of international filmmakers and establishing BIFF as the heart of the Asian film network.
A Cultural Administrator Bridging the Global Film Community
His efforts continued long after stepping down as Festival Director. As Dean of the Graduate School of Cinematic Arts at Dankook University, Chairman of the Presidential Committee for Cultural Enrichment, and Chairman of BIFF, he dedicated himself to nurturing future talent and shaping cultural policy.
He also served as Jury President and Jury Member at prominent international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival's 'Un Certain Regard'' section, as well as festivals in Rotterdam, Fukuoka, Tokyo, and Las Palmas, bridging Korean and Asian cinema with the world.
In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit, the Officier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, the UNESCO Fellini Medal, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Asian Film Awards.
A Directorial Debut at 88 and an Unstoppable Journey
His journey as a filmmaker did not stop even after retirement. The documentary highlighting his cinematic life, 'Film Youth Dong-ho' (2024), was selected for the Cannes Classics section. The following year, he set a new milestone by making his directorial debut with the feature documentary 'Mr. Kim Goes to the Cinema' (2025)—a collaborative effort with world-renowned masters including Lee Chang-dong, Park Chan-wook, Bong Joon-ho, and Hirokazu Kore-eda—which was invited for a special screening at the 30th BIFF.
He had previously directed the short narrative film 'Jury' in 2013. Even at the age of 88, his active presence behind the camera demonstrates that his passion for cinema remains ongoing.
"I Will Continue My Role in Promoting Korean Cinema"
Accepting the award, Kim Dong-ho stated, "Above all, it is an incredible honor to receive such a prestigious award, yet I feel deeply humbled to be recognized by the festival I co-founded and served for 15 years. I still attend nearly a dozen overseas film festivals every year to promote Korean films, and I intend to continue fulfilling this role as long as I am able."
The 2026 Korean Cinema Award ceremony will take place at the opening ceremony of the 31st Busan International Film Festival on October 6 at the Busan Cinema Center. The 31st BIFF will be held for 10 days, running from Tuesday, October 6 to Thursday, October 15, across the Busan Cinema Center and various venues throughout Busan.
