8seconds Builds Metro Manila Base as Samsung C&T Refines K-Fashion Strate...

Four-store network built in core Manila malls, still in pilot phase

Partner-led model limits risk but leaves questions on pace and profitability

Samsung C&T’s fashion division has made the Philippines a test market for its casual brand 8seconds. Since opening the first store at SM Mall of Asia in July 2025, the company has added three more locations across Metro Manila, bringing the total to four. This move reflects a broader shift among Korean apparel players toward overseas markets amid slowing domestic growth.

The current footprint includes SM Mall of Asia, Uptown Mall in Bonifacio Global City, Robinsons Manila, and SM Megamall’s Mega Fashion Hall. All four are large mixed-use malls with established fashion traffic, and 8seconds is located on floors where global fast-fashion brands already operate. Instead of creating new destinations, the brand inserts itself into existing shopping patterns and relies on mall traffic to compensate for low brand awareness in the new market.

Operationally, Samsung C&T works through the Philippine retailer Suyen. Store leases, staff, and daily operations are handled by the local partner, while Samsung focuses on merchandise and marketing. This structure limits capital and operational risk for the Korean side, especially after its earlier exit from China. At the same time, long-term profitability and control depend on how incentives align between the two sides and how much strategic priority Suyen assigns to the brand.

On the product side, 8seconds brings silhouettes already standard in Seoul — oversized tops, wide-leg pants, cropped lengths — and adjusts them to East Asian body types and local spending power. Prices are set between local mass-market labels and Western premium brands, targeting consumers who have adopted Korean pop culture but face budget constraints. It is a straightforward positioning play: use K-content to set the style reference, then offer a more reachable physical version in malls.

Marketing follows the same logic. The brand relies on its collaboration with K-pop group ENHYPEN and active local social media accounts to draw attention to openings and promotions. This can generate quick spikes in store traffic, but ties performance to external content cycles that Samsung C&T does not control. For now, the company seems to be gathering data, monitoring sales patterns, category performance, and campaign response, rather than committing to a rapid scale-up.

What happens next depends on how the Manila numbers look once the initial novelty fades. If the four-store network can sustain margins and traffic without constant promotional support, the model may be replicated in markets such as Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia, where consumer profiles and media consumption are similar. If not, 8seconds could remain a localized experiment rather than the foundation of a wider Southeast Asia strategy.
