[June 3 Local Elections] Democratic Party’s ‘Ottuk Campaign Team’ Deploys to Wando… “Revive Abalone, Tourism, and Culture to Overcome Regional Decline”
Rep. Park Ju-min, Rep. Kim Yun, and Spokesperson Jeon Su-min Provide Support for Candidate Woo Hong-seop… Holds Policy Meeting with Residents, Proposes “Public Purchase of 4,000 Tons of Stored Abalone, Review of Culture Quota System for Population Decline Areas”
(Wando = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = On the 31st, the Democratic Party’s ‘Ottuk Campaign Team’ visited Wando-gun, South Jeolla Province, and held a policy meeting with residents alongside Wando County Governor candidate Woo Hong-seop, pledging full support for the recovery of the crisis-ridden fisheries industry and the revitalization of the local economy.
The meeting was attended by National Assembly members Park Ju-min and Kim Yun, Democratic Party Spokesperson Jeon Su-min, and Rep. Park Ji-won. Various residents, including fisheries workers, young entrepreneurs, cultural and artistic figures, and tourism officials, also joined the gathering to convey their on-site difficulties. At the meeting, residents identified the revitalization of the abalone industry, which is suffering from a triple burden of falling prices and sluggish consumption, as the most urgent task.
In response, Representative Park Ji-won emphasized, “As Candidate Min Hyung-bae promised in Wando yesterday (the 30th), the Democratic Party will definitely implement a plan to publicly purchase 4,000 tons of abalone currently stockpiled in Wando, in conjunction with the upcoming Gwangju-Jeonnam Integrated Special City.”
Furthermore, the participants agreed that the fisheries industry must secure new growth engines by moving away from a distribution structure centered on the simple sale of raw materials and fostering high-value-added processing industries, such as abalone convenience foods, health foods, and functional foods made from seaweed.
In the tourism sector, the limitations of "transient tourism" resulting from a shortage of large-scale accommodation facilities were pointed out. Residents suggested that infrastructure for extended stays, such as attracting large hotels and resorts, is necessary to maximize Wando’s excellent marine healing resources and natural environment.
Representative Park Ju-min responded, “If Wando’s marine healing industry is linked with its tourism resources, it can possess sufficient global competitiveness,” adding, “I will actively review measures to promote the attraction of private investment and expand infrastructure for stay-type tourism.”
In the culture and arts sector, there was continued condemnation regarding the structural disadvantages faced by regions facing population decline. It was pointed out that the current central government’s cultural grant programs are designed to favor large metropolitan municipalities, making it difficult for small cities like Wando to participate. In response, residents proposed the introduction of a "separate quota system" for regions facing population decline to bridge the cultural gap between regions.
Woo Hong-seop, a candidate for Wando County Governor, pointed out, “Many current laws and systems remain stuck in structures from the past era of population expansion, so places like Wando, which are facing the threat of regional extinction, inevitably lose competitiveness under the same standards.” He raised his voice, stating, “Differential support and preferential policies for regions facing population decline across all sectors—including culture, tourism, industry, and welfare—must be codified into law at the central government level.” After concluding the policy discussion, the leadership and Candidate Woo Hong-seop visited commercial areas in downtown Wando to engage with merchants and residents.
Spokesperson Jeon Su-min stated, “Today’s meeting is an opportunity for central politics to directly listen to the cries of the people on the ground and reflect them in policy,” promising active consideration at the Democratic Party level. Assemblyman Kim Yun also conveyed, “As Wando’s marine resources are among the best in the nation, I will contribute to securing the necessary policy support and budget to overcome the crisis of regional extinction.”
After finishing his campaign in the commercial district, Assemblyman Park Ju-min appealed for support, saying, “I have vividly heard the concerns of the county residents regarding the crisis in the abalone industry and regional extinction.” He added, “To make Wando’s marine healing industry flourish and resolve local issues, we need a powerful county head who can communicate directly with the central government and the National Assembly. The Democratic Party’s ‘One Team’ will work together with Candidate Woo Hong-seop to firmly take responsibility for securing a new future and budget for Wando.”
