2026 World Heritage Festival Opens in Haman… Connecting 7 Gaya Tombs into One

First Integrated Festival Since UNESCO Inscription… Held for 14 Days Across 7 Tombs in Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, and Jeonbuk

The ‘2026 World Heritage Festival - Gaya Tombs,’ which connects seven tomb clusters into a single stage for the first time since the Gaya Tombs were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has opened at the Malisan Tombs in Haman.

The opening ceremony, hosted by the National Heritage Administration and the seven local governments of the Gaya Tombs World Heritage Site, and organized by the National Heritage Foundation and the Gaya Tombs World Heritage Foundation, was held on the afternoon of the 28th at the Haman Museum Plaza.

Following a commemorative address by Gyeongnam Governor Park Wan-soo, a welcome address by Haman County Mayor Cha Seok-ho, and a congratulatory speech by National Assembly member Park Sang-woong, the ceremony featured the launching of the ‘World Heritage Children’s Docents,’ composed of 140 elementary school students from the seven Gaya Tombs regions.

The main performance, themed "Together Gaya," expressed the value of coexistence demonstrated by Gaya, followed by performances by distinguished guests and celebratory performances.

Under the theme "A Path We Walk Together, Together," the festival will be held simultaneously for 14 days until September 10 at seven Gaya tomb complexes, including the Malisan Tomb Complex in Haman, Daeseong-dong in Gimhae, Okjeon in Hapcheon, Jisan-dong in Goryeong, Songhak-dong in Goseong, Gyodong and Songhyeon-dong in Changnyeong, and Yugok-ri and Durak-ri in Namwon.

Programs designed to allow visitors to experience the historical value of the World Heritage sites are prepared in each region. Key programs include the astronomical observation "Go to Gaya to See the Stars!", the artifact excavation experience "Let's Try It! Artifact Excavation," and "We Are World Heritage Docents" for children.

In particular, on the 31st, the nighttime performance "Yageum-yageum," which combines gayageum and ballet, will be held at the Malisan Tomb Complex in Haman, showcasing a cultural performance set against the backdrop of the World Heritage. Haman County Governor Cha Seok-ho said, “It is meaningful to announce the start of the festival connecting the seven Gaya tomb complexes as one in Haman, the ancient capital of Aragaya,” adding, “I hope this serves as an opportunity to widely promote the value of the Malisan Tomb Complex and for the Gaya tomb complexes to advance toward the world and the future.”
