The Sound of Haman's Janggu Resonates Across the Nation… The Potential of ‘K-Traditional Performing Arts’ Created by Local Arts Enterprises
Pungmulpae Cheongeum Selected as Outstanding Work in ‘National Pungryu Showcase’ for Two Consecutive Years
Haman’s traditional rhythms are once again drawing attention on the national stage as they meet cutting-edge performance technology. The ‘Show Me the Janggu Project,’ presented by Pungmulpae Cheongeum, a local youth arts enterprise, has proven the competitiveness of local cultural content by being selected as an outstanding work in a nationwide competition for two consecutive years.
Haman County announced on the 5th that the representative work of Pungmulpae Cheongeum, a company selected for the ‘Creating Local Star Enterprises Project,’ was selected as an outstanding work for the second year in a row in the ‘National Pungryu Showcase’ competition hosted by the Korea Foundation for Traditional Performing Arts.
The ‘National Pungryu Showcase’ is a project that supports the modernization of local traditional arts and the development of performance content. Pungmulpae Cheongeum has been recognized for its distinctive artistic merit by incorporating modern stage technologies, such as projection mapping and LED performances, into performances based on Haman's traditional folk melodies.
The ‘Show Me the Janggu Project’ goes beyond a mere reproduction of traditional performances. While maintaining the dynamic rhythms of the janggu and the excitement of pungmulnori, it combines spectacular video and lighting effects to allow younger generations and general audiences to enjoy traditional arts more easily. This new performance style, which blurs the boundaries between tradition and modernity, has been recognized for its competitiveness on the national stage.
This achievement is evaluated as a case demonstrating that local cultural and artistic organizations can possess sufficient content competitiveness even in a nationally competitive environment. It is particularly significant in that traditional art content born in the region continues to receive attention amidst a cultural industry structure centered on the Seoul metropolitan area.
Haman County’s ‘Creating Local Star Enterprises Project’ also lies behind the growth of Pungmulpae Cheongeum. This project is a program designed to discover young startups with high growth potential and nurture them into representative regional brands, and it includes the culture and arts sector as a target for support. Since 2024, Haman County has been selecting companies in various fields, including food, manufacturing, and cultural content, as "Star Enterprises" and providing them with customized support. Pungmulpae Cheongeum, selected as a new Star Enterprise this year, is achieving nationwide success by strengthening its brand competitiveness and enhancing its content.
In particular, this case demonstrates that local traditional culture can grow into a content resource possessing both industrial value and cultural expandability, rather than merely being an object of preservation. It confirms the potential to secure sufficient marketability and popularity by reinterpreting a region's history and traditions with a modern sensibility.
An official from Haman County stated, "The achievements of Pungmulpae Cheongeum are a prime example of a youth startup utilizing local resources gaining recognition for its competitiveness on the national stage," adding, "We will continue to actively support local companies so that they can grow stably."
Meanwhile, following a nationwide tour last year that included performances in Yangju, Gwangsan, Gunwi, Danyang, and Yeoju, Pungmulpae Cheongeum plans to continue its performances this year in areas such as Seocheon, Yeongdong, and Yesan. The sound of the janggu, originating in Haman, is spreading to every corner of the country, writing a new success model for regional cultural content.
