Jincheon County to Conduct Joint Inspections and Enforcement of No-Smoking Zones
Jincheon County, North Chungcheong Province, announced that it will conduct a "joint public-private inspection and enforcement of no-smoking zones" from April 28 to May 4 to create a pleasant and healthy environment free of tobacco smoke.
The inspection will be carried out by organizing two joint inspection teams (4 to 5 members per team), comprising public officials from the Public Health Center and the Food Industry Resources Division, as well as private personnel including volunteer firefighters and members of the Korea Foodservice Association.
To enhance the effectiveness of the inspection, the county will conduct checks during nighttime hours as well as daytime.
The inspection targets approximately 480 locations, including no-smoking zones designated under the National Health Promotion Act and Jincheon County ordinances, tobacco vending machines, and tobacco retailers within the county, with the goal of inspecting at least 10% of the total targets.
Furthermore, tobacco retailers have been included in this inspection target as management and inspections have been strengthened following the amendment to the Tobacco Business Act, which took effect on April 24. In particular, priority inspections will be given to facilities with high public importance, such as government offices, medical facilities, schools, and daycare centers, focusing on areas where complaints regarding smoking in non-smoking zones are frequent.
Key inspection points include: compliance with facility standards for non-smoking zones and smoking rooms (smoking areas); enforcement against smoking in public facilities; compliance with installation standards for cigarette vending machines; and compliance with tobacco advertising standards in tobacco retail stores.
In addition, the expertise of the inspections will be enhanced by the participation of smoking cessation officers, guidance counselors, and smoking cessation counselors.
Along with enforcement, the county plans to conduct promotional activities to create a smoke-free environment, such as distributing non-smoking zone signs and promotional materials, and providing facility information leaflets and stickers.
Park Yun-ha, an official at the County Health Promotion Division, stated, "Through this joint public-private inspection, we aim to eradicate smoking in non-smoking zones and protect the health of county residents from secondhand smoke," adding, "We ask for the active cooperation of residents and facility managers so that a proper smoke-free environment can be established."
