Jeungpyeong County Hosts ‘7th Children and Youth Policy Presentation Festival’… Listening to Proposals from Future Generations
Jeungpyeong County has prepared a meaningful venue for communication to directly incorporate the voices of future generations into county administration and guarantee children’s right to proactive participation. Jeungpyeong County announced that it held the finals of the ‘7th Jeungpyeong County Children and Youth Policy Presentation Festival’ on the 25th at the main conference room on the second floor of the county office.
The Children and Youth Policy Presentation Festival is a program launched in 2020 to realize children’s right to participation guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It is a participatory event where local children and youth identify inconveniences in their daily lives and propose solutions as policies.
This year, 64 participants from 20 teams applied to participate, a significant increase from the 34 participants in 12 teams last year. Following a rigorous preliminary screening, 17 participants from 5 final teams advanced to the final stage.
The finalists presented a variety of ideas based on problems they experienced firsthand in their daily lives. Key proposals presented included creating an environment for free cultural life, integrated improvements to smart traffic safety, an analysis of youth learning space usage and improvement measures, the establishment of "Happy Youth Walking Streets," and the introduction of customized weekend tour buses and passes for Jeungpyeong.
The judging process comprehensively evaluated necessity, logic, and feasibility, awarding prizes in five categories: Empathy, Logic, Future, Sustainability, and Innovation. Approximately 30 representatives from schools and children and youth organizations attended the event, listening attentively to the participants' voices and offering enthusiastic support.
One student who participated in the event stated that conceiving and presenting policies firsthand gave them the confidence that they, too, can change the region, and expressed hope that the diverse voices of youth would continue to be listened to in the future.
An official from Jeungpyeong County stated that the event is deeply meaningful because the children directly considered necessary policies from various angles while observing the local community. The official added that the county will share the presented proposals with relevant departments for continuous review to ensure they are actively reflected in actual county administration, and will further expand opportunities for children to participate in policy-making.
