Jeungpyeong County Hosts Photo Exhibition on Daily Life of People with Disabilities at Meoritdol Eunhyewon… Sharing Empathy through ‘Donghaeng Siktak’
Jeungpyeong County, North Chungcheong Province, is holding a special photo exhibition titled “Warm Companionship” in the county office lobby, featuring the ordinary and simple daily lives of people with severe disabilities.
Running until the 31st, this exhibition was planned to broaden social understanding of people with disabilities by naturally sharing their daily lives with residents, and to break down the boundaries between the disabled and the non-disabled to promote their presence as neighbors in the community living together.
The exhibition space features photographs capturing the colorful daily lives of 22 people with severe disabilities living at Meoritdol Eunhyewon, a residential facility for the disabled located in Oebongcheon, Yulli, Jeungpyeong County. By utilizing the county office lobby, a frequently visited space by residents, as an exhibition venue, Jeungpyeong County has significantly reduced the psychological distance between people with and without disabilities.
On the first day of the event, residents of Meoritdol Eunhyewon were invited to the county office to view the artwork together. Following this, the ‘Donghaeng Siktak’ event took place at the county office cafeteria, where public officials and people with disabilities gathered to share lunch. The attendees enjoyed a meaningful time of empathy, exchanging casual conversations over a meal and sharing their daily lives and thoughts.
An official from Meoritdol Eunhyewon expressed their sentiments, stating that opportunities to meet with ordinary county residents are rare, and it was deeply meaningful to be able to introduce their daily lives and blend in as confident members of the community in the open space of the county office. They added that it became a special memory that will remain with the residents for a long time.
An official from Jeungpyeong County also emphasized that all the residents of Meoritdol Eunhyewon, who live in a remote area, are precious citizens who make up Jeungpyeong. They expressed hope that this photo exhibition and the Donghaeng Siktak event would serve as a valuable catalyst for building a warm local community that understands and respects one another more deeply.
