South Jeolla Province Issues Advisory on Vibrio Septicemia, a ‘40% Mortality Rate’…

“Seafood Must Be Cooked”: Strong Urge to Adhere to Prevention Guidelines Following Death in Gyeonggi Region; High-Risk Groups with Underlying Conditions, Such as Liver Disease, Need Special Caution Regarding Seawater Contact and Raw Food Consumption

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Following a recent death from Vibrio septicemia in Gyeonggi Province, South Jeolla Province has strongly urged residents to strictly adhere to infection prevention guidelines, including refraining from eating raw seafood and avoiding contact of wounds with seawater.

Vibrio septicemia is a representative summer infectious disease, with the first cases appearing around April or May when seawater temperatures rise above 18℃, and outbreaks occurring intensively between August and October. In particular, residents are required to exercise caution in the South Jeolla region, as Vibrio septicemia bacteria were first detected in the mudflats of Yeonggwang on March 9. According to data from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, 284 cases were reported nationwide over the past five years, resulting in 114 deaths. In the Jeonnam region as well, 38 cases were reported during the same period, with 17 fatalities, indicating a very high mortality rate.

Vibrio septicemia primarily occurs when high-risk groups with underlying conditions—such as liver disease, alcohol dependence, or diabetes—consume raw contaminated seafood or become infected through skin wounds. It is extremely dangerous, with a fatality rate exceeding 40%.

Symptoms such as fever, chills, vomiting, and diarrhea appear within 12 to 17 hours of infection. Subsequently, symptoms rapidly deteriorate, leading to the formation of hemorrhagic blisters on the skin and subsequent necrosis. Since progression to sepsis can lead to death within a short period, one must seek medical attention immediately if suspicious symptoms appear. Jeong Gwang-seon, Director of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Jeollanam-do, emphasized, “As Jeollanam-do has the longest coastline in the country and the risk of infection is always present, residents with underlying health conditions must exercise special caution, such as boiling seafood thoroughly before consumption and avoiding contact with seawater if they have open wounds.”
